Summary
The connection of the thermocouple to connect to the combination thermostat/gas valve. From left to right: the end ball (contact) that carries millivolts, insulating washer and connector fitting with metal sheath inserted inside. The thermocouple line consists of the outer metal (usually copper) sheath, insulator and copper wire. The millivolt current runs through the copper wire and grounded at the sheath.
