Summary
Map of the states and territories of the United States as it was from March 1861 to August 1861. On March 2 1861, Dakota Territory was split from Nebraska Territory, and gained the northern area of unorganized land; also, Nevada Territory was split from Utah Territory. On August 1 1861, the Confederacy established Arizona Territory, consisting of the southern half of the Union's New Mexico Territory; the Union still claimed the whole territory.
