Secretary of LSE 1938 -46 Director of LSE 1967-74
'A former student of, and lecturer in history at, University College, London. He served as Secretary to the Academic Assistance Council, concerned with the relief and resettlement of academic victims of Nazi oppression 1933-1938. He was Secretary of the London School of Economics 1938-1946 but was called to Government service, serving as Deputy Head of the British Political Warfare Mission to the US in Washington 1942-44 and appointed Asst. Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Office Political Intelligence Department in 1945. From 1946-1955 he was the first Secretary to the Inter-University Council for Higher Education Overseas and before becoming Director of the School in 1967 he was for twelve years Principal of University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. He retired in 1974 and died in 1975 whilst on a visit to Rhodesia to receive an honorary degree from the University.' LSE Magazine, November 1983, No 66, p.19
