It was designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Henry_Wyatt" class="extiw" title="en:Thomas Henry Wyatt">en:Thomas_Henry_Wyatt</a> ) as a shooting lodge for the Fevershams of Duncombe Park, Helmsley during the grouse shooting season on Westerdale Moor.
The nearby moors are still a valuable sporting estate, shooters now stay at Dale View Farm across the valley.

After WW2 it became a Youth Hostel but is now a private residence.
