Flint Hills Technical College (FHTC) is a two-year public institution of higher education located in Emporia, Kansas.

History

The college was founded in 1963 when the Emporia Board of Education made application to the Kansas State Board of Education. FHTC was granted associate degree status by the Kansas Legislature during the 1995 Legislative Session and on July 1, 1999, FHTC became apart of the Kansas Board of Regents. On July 1, 2004, Flint Hills Technical College became an independent institution, separating from the Emporia Public School District.[4] The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accredited Flint Hills Technical College on February 6, 2007.[5]

Governance

The Kansas Board of Regents governs six universities and coordinates and supervises Kansas’ 19 community colleges, five technical colleges, and five technical schools. Within Kansas Board of Regents’ purview is the establishment of policies related to all institutions and the approval of all programs and course offerings. Courses may be submitted for approval on an as-needed basis, and program approvals may be submitted monthly. Institutions that wish to deliver approved programs or courses within the service area governed by the Flint Hills Technical College.[6]

Board of Trustees

FHTC is governed by a seven-member board of trustees. The Board of Trustees possess all of the powers of a body corporate for the purposes created by or that may exist under provisions of the law of the State of Kansas to exercise such rights and privileges as may be necessary for the management and administration of FHTC. The Board has the responsibility for the development and operation of FHTC in accordance with provisions of the Kansas law and the standards of the Kansas Board of Regents.[7]
