Ford Motor Company Philippines (FMCP) is a Philippine-based automotive distributor. It is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, and is focused on manufacturing automobiles for local and regional markets. FMCP builds the Ford Escape, Ford Laser, Ford Lynx, Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Mazda Tribute for the local market, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.[1][2][3][4] Ford's lone manufacturing plant was located in Santa Rosa, Laguna, Philippines. Currently, Ford Philippines imports vehicles that are sold in the Philippine market.[1] These imports come mostly from Thailand and the United States.[4]

History

Ford's history in the Philippines can be traced back to 1913 with the Ford Model T of the United States being assembled in the Philippines.[citation needed] In 1929, Henry Ford founded the Pilipinas Ford Car Works, Inc. (PFCW). In 1963, the company became the Ford Philippines Corporation (FPC) Production began in 1967 with the Fiera AUV, Escort sedan, Cortina sedan and Granada sedan. The original assembly plant was located in Sucat, Paranaque City, Metro Manila, while a body stamping plant was established in Bataan Province. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the company introduced the Laser, Telstar, Econovan and Courier into the local market. The company changed its name to Ford Motor Company Philippines Inc. (FMCP) in 1997 and proceeded to launch US-made vehicles such as the Expedition, F-150, Clubwagon and Lincoln Town Car.

The new P4 Billion state-of-the-art Santa Rosa plant in Laguna Province opened in September 1999. The first car manufactured at the plant was the Ford Lynx, and the company began building the Mazda-based local Ford Ranger in March 2000. A truck assembly plant was opened in 1955.[4]

In the early 2000s, the company expanded its line-up with the introduction of the Escape SUV, Explorer SUV and Everest SUV. Towards the end of the decade, the Fiesta and Mustang were also introduced in the local market.

Ford Motor Company Philippines has been the most successful exporter of Completely Built-Up (CBU) vehicles from the Philippines. For over a decade, the company has been exporting Ford and Mazda passenger cars and compact SUVs to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Ford announced the consolidation of manufacturing operations in Southeast Asia and the cessation of plant operations at the Santa Rosa plant, citing the "lack of supply base and economies of scale." as the main reasons why the decision was made.[2][5] 250 workers were affected by the decision, which Ford Philippines tried to resolve by offering them work at other Ford manufacturing facilities overseas.Despite this closure, Ford Philippines is opening more dealerships and expanding its vehicle lineup by the year 2015.[6]

Ford Philippines has announced on May 3, 2013 that Kay Hart was appointed to be the managing director of the company, replacing Randy Krieger as he was appointed director, Marketing and Sales at Ford ASEAN.[7]

Ford Philippines has achieved record vehicle sales in the Philippines for 2014 - making Ford the fastest-growing car brand in the Philippines and among the Top Four vehicle brands in the Philippines by 2014. January 2015 sales results have shown that Ford has moved up to become the third best-selling car brand in the Philippines.
