The Coloradoan is a daily newspaper in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Coloradoan's website is updated throughout the day with breaking news and video coverage of community news. A portion of the paper's newsroom serves as Northern Newsroom for 9News.

History

Founded by Joseph L. McClelland in 1873 as Larimer County Express, Fort Collins Newspapers Inc. was established in 1937 when Speidel Newspapers acquired the publication known as The Express-Courier. The Coloradoan moved from its Old Town Fort Collins location to 1212 Riverside Ave. on the city's east side in 1974. Gannett acquired the newspaper when it merged with Speidel in 1977.

In 2004, Gannett began construction on a new $6 million facility on property adjacent to their Riverside site. In June 2005, advertising, circulation, human resources, news and technology staffs moved into 1300 Riverside Ave.

Daily paper

The Coloradoan focuses on local news in its A section. Section B features content from USA TODAY, including national and international news. There are also daily Sports and Life sections.

A lifestyles content with themed pages leads coverage. Monday is health and fitness; Tuesday is transportation; Wednesday is food and drink; Thursday is Xplore (outdoors); Fridays is causes; Saturdays is home and garden; Sunday is a Your Life section that includes a Sunday Conversation with a member of the community, celebrations, columns and reader-submitted photos.

Sports includes local high school coverage, CSU and semi-pro teams around the area as well as Denver pro teams and national sports.

The Publisher of the Coloradoan is Kathy Jack-Romero. The Executive Editor is Lauren Gustus.

Digital Access

Website

The Coloradoan's website offers exclusive local content, an e-newspaper (digital version of the print newspaper), and a 30-day article archive. The site also offers photo galleries and interactive content such as a Fort Collins dining guide and an interactive map of the Foothills mall. http://www.coloradoan.com/

Mobile and Tablet Apps

Each Coloradoan subscription (digital or print) includes access to the mobile and tablet apps. The apps include customized alerts for news, traffic, weather, sports, and entertainment. With these alerts, you can be the first to know about breaking news, what area of town to avoid due to traffic, a new concert lineup, or the score of a game. The apps also allow you to customize your views and save your favorite stories. There is also a separate app available that provides a digital version of the print newspaper.

Community involvement

The Coloradoan does a great deal of work in the community through sponsorships and events. Currently, the Coloradoan is working hard to support The United Way of Larimer County and the Matthews House. Each year, the staff set goals for their support through fundraisers within the company and the community.

Not only does the Coloradoan support United Way, they also support many other local companies through sponsorship. Past sponsorships include: Fort Collins Symphony, Fort Collins Cat Rescue, The Boys and Girls Club, Larimer Humane Society, and more.

The Coloradoan also hosts events as well as sponsors local events such as: Fort Collins Beer Week, the Colorado Marathon, Bike Month, Taste of Fort Collins, Loveland County Fair, Loveland Rotary Duck Race, The Poudre RiverFest, the Food Truck Festival, and more.

For Insiders, the Coloradoan hosts a number of events as well as gives away tickets to local events such as: Secret Supper, Community Dinner, Cirque Du Soleil, Red Rocks Concerts, and more.

Business

What was once a single page on the back of the "B" section, has turned into a four-page spread in the second "A" section. Each day is filled with local content, wire content and a small sampling of local stocks. The section features Katy Piotrowski's "On the job' column for those looking to find or change jobs or careers, "Small business" by syndicated columnist Rhonda Abrams and WorkBytes, a workplace column for Generation X written alternately by Dawn Sagario and Larry Ballard, both of The Des Moines Register.

Sports

Miles Blumhardt leads the sports department, which includes four reporters. The staff includes Matt Stephens (Colorado State University), Kelly Lyell (Colorado State University), Tyler Silvy (high school sports) and Kevin Lytle (high school sports/Windsor Beacon).

Xplore

Xplore is the Coloradoan's destination for outdoor adventure topics. Outdoors content appears in print on Thursdays and Sundays and at coloradoan.com. Reporter Stephen Meyers leads outdoors coverage.

Ticket

A free weekly shopper, Ticket, contains repurposed material from the newspaper and is delivered to non-subscribers bundled with full-color advertising inserts. 39,000 copies are delivered to non-subscribers of the Coloradoan and 3,000 copies are delivered through free racks located throughout Northern Colorado.

Windsor Beacon

The Coloradoan’s Windsor Beacon is a small newspaper that has served Windsor, CO since 1896. The Windsor Beacon supplies Windsor residents with local news and event information every Sunday and Wednesday.

Extra editions

The Coloradoan printed an extra November 18, 1991, upon the release of Beirut hostage Thomas Sutherland, a Fort Collins resident. The Coloradoan's banner headline read "He's Free".

The newspaper also published an extra edition on September 11, 2001.
