Glyndwr "Glyn" Shaw (born (1951-04-11) 11 April 1951 (age 73) in Rhigos) is a Welsh dual-code international rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1970s and '80s playing representative level rugby union (RU) for Wales, and at club level for Neath RFC, playing at Prop forward, i.e. number 1 or 3, and playing representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain, and Wales, and at club level for Widnes, as a Prop, or Second-row, i.e. number 8 or 10, or, 11 or 12.[1]

Playing career

International honours

Shaw won caps for Wales (RU) while at Neath RFC in 1972 against New Zealand, in 1973 against England, Scotland, Ireland, France, and Australia, in 1974 against Scotland, Ireland, France, and England, and in 1977 against Ireland, and France, won caps for Wales (RL) while at Widnes in 1978 against France, and Australia, in 1980 against France, and England, in 1981 against England, in 1982 against Australia, and in 1984 against England, and won a cap for Great Britain (RL) while at Widnes in 1980 against New Zealand.[2]

Challenge Cup final appearances

Shaw played Right-Prop, i.e. number 10 in Widnes' 12-3 victory over Wakefield Trinity in the 1979 Challenge Cup final during the 1978–79 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 5 May 1979, and was an Interchange/Substitute, i.e. number 15, in the 18-9 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers in the 1981 Challenge Cup final during the 1980–81 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 2 May 1981.

County Cup final appearances

Shaw played Right-Prop, i.e. number 10, in Widnes' 15-13 victory over Workington Town in the 1978 Lancashire Cup final during the 1978–79 season at Central Park, Wigan on Saturday 7 October 1978, and played Right-Prop in the 11-0 victory over Workington Town in the 1979 Lancashire Cup final during the 1979–80 season at The Willows, Salford on Saturday 8 December 1979.

Shaw played Right-Prop, i.e. number 10, (replaced by Interchange/Substitute Alan Dearden) in Widnes' 4-9 defeat by Warrington in the 1977-78 Players No.6 Trophy final during the 1977–78 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens on Saturday 28 January 1978, played Right-Prop in the 16-4 victory over Warrington in the 1978–79 John Player Trophy final during the 1978–79 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens on Saturday 28 April 1979, played Right-Prop in the 0-6 defeat by Bradford Northern in the 1979–80 John Player Trophy final during the 1979–80 season at Headingley Stadium, Leeds on Saturday 5 January 1980, and played Left-Prop, i.e. number 8, in Wigan's 15-4 victory over Leeds in the 1982–83 John Player Trophy final during the 1982–83 season at Elland Road, Leeds on Saturday 22 January 1983.[3]

Club career

Shaw switched to rugby league in 1977 to join Widnes, in November 1981 he was signed by Wigan for £25,000 (based on increases in average earnings, this would be approximately £120,600 in 2013).[4][5]

Personal life

Glyn Shaw has two children by his first marriage to Linda; Richard Gordon Shaw (born 16 January 1970), and Emma Lousie Shaw (born 16 October 1972), and two daughters by his second marriage to Janie; Bethan Shaw (born 26 July 1984), and Megan Shaw born (18 December 1988). He currently lives in Widnes in Cheshire, England.
