Description

Like several stations in central Dublin, it is elevated above street level, with steps leading down to Barrow Street in South Lotts, near Google's European headquarters.

The ticket office is open between 06:00-00:00 AM, Monday to Sunday.

The station has three platforms. Platforms 1 and 2 are accessed by a footbridge and platform 3 has level access. Platform 1 is a former terminal platform, currently being converted into the Northbound main line. It did not have overhead electric cables and had a permanent sign reading "Do not board any trains at platform 1" which was removed in May 2015. This platform was fitted with overhead cables in November 2015. Platform 2 is intended to be used for South Western Commuter trains to Kildare, which are expected to commence operations in late 2016 or early 2017.

Since November 2014, the station has undergone a major refurbishment, with the installation of new destination displays, rebuilding of platform 1, resurfacing of all platforms, the provision of a new evacuation bridge and a centre road terminating turn back facility for southbound trains. The refurbishment is substantially complete as of May 2015, although major resignalling and track work is still taking place.[1]

History

This station was opened on 23 January 2001 and the first station clerk on duty was Mick O'Grady and the senior depot man was Nigel McArdle and this was Dublin's newest station until Docklands Station opened in March 2007.

Grand Canal Dock is built on the site of the former locomotive shed at Canal Street and across from the engineering works (closed 1925) of the Dublin & Kingstown Railway (1834).

City Centre Resignalling

The completion of the Irish Rail City Centre resignalling project[2] will see an

  • increase in the number of Northern and Maynooth line suburban trains stopping at Grand Canal Dock
  • possibility of trains from Kildare also serving Grand Canal Dock

This will be made possible by making available all three platforms at Grand Canal Dock and the ability of the signalling system in the city centre to operate 20 trains per hour in both directions instead of 8.

The project began in March 2015 and is currently underway. It is expected to be completed by late 2016 or early 2017. [3]
