Hairdressers Journal International is a monthly glossy magazine for the hairdressing industry, published in the United Kingdom. The magazine has been in circulation since 1882 and is considered a trusted source of information for the industry.[1] As well as inspirational hairdressing imagery from leading names and ones to watch, HJ also provides trend features, salon business advice and coverage of news and events in the hairdressing industry. The magazine editor is Ruth Hunsley.

In 2015, Reed Business Information sold HJ to M Squared Media.[2]

HJi

In April 2007, HJ launched its website HJi.co.uk, which gives the hairdressing community an online place to seek inspiration. The focal point of the site is an image gallery with thousands of pictures of hairstyles, dating from the 1950s to the present day. It also contains news, celebrity and catwalk style features, business advice and a dedicated student channel, Future Talent.

British Hairdressing Awards

HJ hosts the annual British Hairdressing Awards, in association with Schwarzkopf Professional. The British Hairdressing Awards were launched in 1985 and to mark its 30th anniversary, a limited-edition coffee-table photographic book was launched featuring images from all of the winners.

There are 16 categories in the awards; 9 regional, 6 specialist and the ultimate title, HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year. Entry is by submission of a series of photos, which are judged twice. First they’re judged by a group including past winners and industry icons. For the second round, they’re again judged by past winners and industry icons and select members of the hair and beauty press.

The awards are judged independently and anonymously in both rounds with absolutely no conferring, and are audited by an independent auditor to ensure complete impartiality and fairness. Judges are not able to see the name or salon name of any entry, and any judge who has an interest in a category – either an employee or who has given advice to any entrant in a category – is excluded from judging that category.

Each year a select group of hairdressers are nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year. Key people within the hairdressing industry and selected members of the UK and international press are asked to nominate those individuals they feel best embody the role of British Hairdresser of the Year. They should select individuals with an exceptional professional reputation who have extraordinary creative and trendsetting ability and who are also ambassadors for British hairdressing in the UK and overseas.

British Hairdressing Business Awards

HJ also hosts the annual British Hairdressing Business Awards, which celebrate the business side of the hairdressing industry in the UK.

There are 16 categories in the awards covering areas including retail, marketing, salon design, innovation, customer care and training, as well as the ultimate accolade, Business Director of the Year.

Salon International

HJ hosts an annual three-day hair and beauty trade show called Salon International. Currently held at ExCel London, it was founded in 1973 and takes place each October.

As well as hundreds of hair and beauty exhibitors, Salon International also features seminars and shows by leading names and HJ's British Hairdressing Awards Gallery, where guests can see the work of finalists in the awards.
