Work

Buchman was principal trombonist in the San Diego Symphony[8] from 1988 to 1996. Her appointment received significant press for being one of the first female principal brass positions in a major orchestra.[6][8][9] In 1993, she won an Orchestra Recognition Award.[10] Her playing has been called "stunning in performance" by trombonist, Cathy Leach.[11] As a soloist, she has won prizes in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany, and the New York Philharmonic Young Artists Concerto Competition, and has commissioned and premiered several new works for trombone. Buchman received a Women Conductors Grant from the League of American Orchestras in 2008 to study conducting in St. Petersburg, Russia.[12] Rob Bridge, the president of the Society for New Music (SNM) has called Buchman a "vibrant acclaimed conductor, virtuoso trombonist, award-winning professor."[3] She is the founding member of the KAIROS Chamber Orchestra, which debuted in fall 2007 at Hamilton College's Wellin Hall, in which Buchman conducted Dvořák's Serenade for Strings and Copland's Appalachian Spring.
