Henriette Wyeth Hurd (October 22, 1907 – April 3, 1997) was an American artist noted for portraits and still life paintings.
Early life and career
Wyeth was born on October 22, 1907 in Wilmington, Delaware to illustrator N.C. Wyeth[2] and his wife Carolyn. She is also the sister to artist Andrew Wyeth. When Wyeth was 3, she contracted Polio which altered her right hand. As a result, she learned to draw with her left and painted with her right.[3] She studied at both the Normal Arts School in Boston, Massachusetts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.[2] She studied with her father at age 11 and attended Normal Arts School at age 13. Wyeth met her husband, artist Peter Hurd while he was studying with her father; the two married in 1929. Wyeth painted many famous portraits in her lifetime; she is best known for her portrait of former First Lady Pat Nixon.[4] She also received several awards for her work, including the Governor's Award in Santa Fe, New Mexico.[2] Much of her work is located at The Roswell Museum and Art Center, in Roswell, New Mexico.[4]
