It is one of five junior high schools in the city belonging to the Fremont Unified School District. Graduates from four local elementary schools, John Gomes Elementary, Mission San Jose Elementary, Joshua Chadbourne Elementary, and Mission Valley Elementary attend Hopkins Junior High. Students leaving Hopkins move on to Mission San Jose High School or Irvington High School, if they choose.[citation needed] The school had the highest API score for public junior high schools in California for the year of 2005 and 2007, and the second highest in 2006.[3] The school was recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program in both 2001-02 and in 2012.[4]

It includes three levels of concert bands (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble), two levels of jazz bands (Jazz Workshop, Jazz Ensemble), two levels of string orchestras (Intermediate Orchestra, Advanced Orchestra), and a full orchestra. All ensembles participate in multiple performances throughout the year including Winter & Spring Concerts, CMEA Bay Section Festivals, a Music in the Parks Festival at California's Great America, and a Music in the Parks Festival in Anaheim (Disneyland).

The Hopkins music department has a long streak of Unanimous Superiors. From 2008-2014, the Hopkins Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Advanced Orchestra, Intermediate Orchestra, and Concert Band all received first place at the Music in the Parks Festival.

At CMEA festivals, the groups have received superior ratings in the following years:

The Hopkins speech and debate program runs through The Brooks Academy, formed in Fall 2013. The team is part of the East Bay Debate League and attends league competitions in addition to several high school level tournaments. The team participates in many different types of debate, including MSPDP, Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, and Parliamentary Debate. The team is made up of experienced debaters as well as beginners. The debate program is coached by Head Coach Stephan Brooks, Coach Alfonso Lara, Coach Victor Rivas, and more. The speech program is coached by Head Coach Stephan Leal, Coach Jennifer Xiong, and more. The team was responsible for being the home of the Hopkins Middle School Debate Program. The Hopkins Debate team was very successful in their league, the East Bay Debate League (EBDL). In 2012, Rohan Saxena, Ansh Patel, and Jonathan Chen went to MSPDP Nationals, representing Hopkins Jr. High's first team at Nationals. The following year, 2013, Brendan Wu, Albert Yu, and Kunal Agarwal, went to MSPDP Nationals. The team won their first four rounds, and lost the last one. They earned 15th place at the national tournament. The Hopkins Team was transferred to the Olive Children Foundation. One of the most notable achievements of The Brooks Academy is from Fall 2013, when Max Wu and Nikit Shingari placed 1st in the Public Forum division at the national University of the Pacific Jon Schamber Invitational Forensics tournament.[10]
