A government-initiated referendum on European Union migrant quotas will be held in Hungary in autumn of 2016.[1]

On 24 February 2016, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced during an extraordinary press conference that the Hungarian government initiated a referendum on whether to accept European Union's mandatory quotas for relocating migrants.[2] He also said it is "no secret that the Hungarian government refuses migrant quotas" and will campaigning for "No" votes. Orbán argued the quota system would "redraw Hungary and Europe's ethnic, cultural and religious identity, which no EU body has the right to do".[3]
