Dr.Ibrahim Bijli Syed (born March 16, 1939) is an American Muslim and radiologist. He was born in Bellary, Karnataka, the son of Mumtaz Begum and B. Syed Ahmed.[1] Syed is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky.[2][3]

Early life and career
Dr. Ibrahim Bijli Syed was born in Bellary, India to Mumtaz Begum and Bijli Syed Ahmed, who had served the Police Department for 34 years in Bellary District and retired as Sub-Inspector of Police [1]. Ibrahim Syed's paternal grandfather, Syed Peeran also served in the Police Department and retired as a Station House Officer in Bellary.
"Syed Peeran" was conferred with the Title of "Bijli" (Blitz or Lightning) by the then British Government of India in 1928 for his exemplary courage and gallantry in saving the lives of public and Police officers in communal riots and for arresting the hard-core criminals.
Ibrahim Syed was educated at Municipal High School in Bellary and at Municipal High School in Hospet. He received his B. Sc. in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Bellary Veerasaiva College (First Class- First) from the University of Mysore in 1960.He received his M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Physics in Bangalore Central College from the University of Mysore in India. In 1972, he obtained a D.Sc. in radiological sciences from Johns Hopkins University.[4] In 1984,with First Class and Distinction. He served as Sergeant in NCC (National Cadet Corps). Syed was appointed as Instructor in Physics at Veerasaiva College, in Bellary. Later he was appointed as Karnataka State's the First Medical Physicist and Radiation Safety Officer by the Government of Karnataka at the Victoria Hospital in Bangalore, India
He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the International University in Malta in 1984.[5]
After completing his education, Syed entered the field of radiation safety. When asked about how he came into this field, he said, "When I did my postgraduate studies in radiological physics, radiation safety was part of the curricula. When I worked as Chief of Medical Physics in India, Canada, and the United States, radiation safety was part of my job responsibilities. While pursuing my Master's degree in nuclear physics, I became fascinated with health physics. Since then, I have tried to learn as much of this field as possible."[6]
Dr. Syed is an educator and currently he is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, Kentucky and a former Professor of Nuclear Medicine.His research interests include Medical imaging, Nanotechnology in Medicine, Information technology in Medicine and Biotechnology. He has authored over 100 original publications, books chapters.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, a Fellow of the British Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health . He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and Sigma Xi. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Health Physics and serving as an Examiner for both the Boards He served as a Technical Expert in Nuclear Medicine for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) located in Vienna, Austria with field missions to the Republic of Bangladesh and the Republic of Guatemala in Central America.
He served as an expert in Radiological Physics under the United Nations Development Program and visited premiere postgraduate Medical Institutions in India for a period of two months to evaluate and report to the Government of India the status of patient care utilizing medical imaging technologies such as CT scanners, MRI scanners, SPECT scanners and linear accelerators in Radiation Oncology Departments for treating cancer.
He is a visiting professor at many universities in India and visiting scholar at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Trombay, Mumbai, India. He is an invited speaker at his Professional Organizational meetings as well as at many Islamic Institutions both in North America, Middle East, South Africa, India and Indonesia.

Syed is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine,[2][3] and a former Professor of Nuclear Medicine.[6]
He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, the American Institute of Chemists, the British Institute of Physics, and the Royal Society of Health.[4][7] He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and Sigma Xi, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Health Physics[8] and of the American Board of Radiology, as well as an examiner for both boards. He functioned as a technical expert in nuclear medicine for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He also served as an expert in radiological physics for the United Nations Development Program, visiting postgraduate medical institutions in India over a two-month period.[5]
Syed is listed in several biographical reference works, including American Men and Women of Science and a number of Marquis Who's Who publications. He is also a notary public in Kentucky, and is commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel.[1] In 2002 he was given the Robert A. Miller Award for diversity.[9]

Syed has written more than 400 articles on a multitude of Islamic subjects, particularly on Islam and the Qur'an as they relate to science. These articles were published in Aalim, Islamic Voice, Islamic Monitor, The Message, Al-Balaagh, Islamic Horizons, The Message International, The Muslim Journal, Iqra, The Fountain, The Quranic Horizons, Islamic Renaissance, Journal of Comstech and Journal of the Islamic Medical Association.
Awards and honors
As an undergraduate at Veerasaiva College in Bellary, he received the Proficiency Prizes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. He received the First Prize for English Essay Writing Competition and Also the First Prize in Public Debating. He became a Chess champion and played the role of Bishop of Digne, in the drama of Les Misérables of Victor Hugo at the CMA Hostel in Bangalore.
Government of India and WHO (World Health Organization) scholarships to study DRP at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Trombay, Bombay. USPHS (United States Public Health Service) Scholarship to pursue Doctoral Studies at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
He is an External Ph.D. Thesis Examiner for the Universities of Delhi and Allahabad in India and Clayton Institute for Advanced Studies in Missouri.
He is recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award conferred by India Community Foundation. He also received "Hind Rattan" award for his outstanding contributions to India. In 2008 he received "Distinguished Service Award" from the American Board of Radiology. In December 2010 he received the Islamic Civilization Advancement Award. In March 20, 2013 he received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree (Honoris Causa) from the VSKD University, India.

Community service
He served the Indian community in Louisville, as President of India Community Foundation, as a Member of the Board, Vice Chairman and finally Chairman. He is regularly invited to the Parliament of World Religions Conferences held every four years, in different countries of the world. He is a founding member and member of many Islamic Organizations in North America. He served many Muslim communities as a Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President including the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers of North America. He is a Founder and currently President of the Islamic Research Foundation International Inc., headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the past Publisher and an associate Editor of its publication Aalim.[10] . He is the Convener of International Conferences on "Islamic Renaissance" held in Chicago in 1995. He is the Founder and Chairman (Managing Trustee) of the Bijli Foundation Charitable Trust, located in Bellary.
He is the World's Foremost Exponent for the interpretation of Qur'an (Islam's sacred text) in the light of modern knowledge. He regularly gives color-slide presentation lectures on various Islamic subjects at the Islamic Centers in USA and abroad. Occasionally he serves as an Imam (prayer leader) and Khatib (one who delivers the Sermon) for Jumu'ah (Friday Sabbath) prayers in local Masajids (Mosques) and outside Louisville. He is a volunteer Muslim Chaplain (Imam) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center[11] and many Kentucky prisons. He is also a qadi (a judge of religious law) and is licensed to perform Islamic marriages in Kentucky and Indiana.[5] He is a Notary Public in Kentucky State at Large. He is Commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, by the Governor of Kentucky.
Personal life
Syed lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife Sajida. They have been married for 48 years and have two children, Mubin and Zafrin. Dr. Mubin Syed is a Board Certified interventional Radiologist and Neuroradiologist who practices at Dayton Interventional Radiology, Dayton, Ohio. He is married to Afshan and they have three children, Nadia, Rehan and Lena. Dr. Zafrin Syed is a Psychiatrist who is practicing in Hazard, Kentucky. She is married to Salman Iqbal and they have a daughter, Zorianna.
Syed diligently promotes Islamic Renaissance or Intellectual Upliftment of Muslims through Critical Thinking, Opposing Points of View, and Ijtihad. He is working to found "Evidence Based Religion" He established the IRFI (Islamic Research Foundation International) Center located at 1448 Gardiner Lane, Louisville, Kentucky, which serves as the World Headquarters of IRFI.
He has acquired fluency in many languages such as Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Urdu, German, Spanish, Sanskrit and Arabic. As a student of comparative religion he enjoys his research work on the Vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita by reading them in Sanskrit, which is indispensable for Da'wah work.
