The following existing seven government maritime Training and Research Institutes were merged with IMU:

The Campuses

Chennai Campus

Located at Uthandi, ECR, Chennai-600119, conducts B.tech. courses in Marine engineering, DNS, B.sc. in Nautical science, Master's degrees in International transport and logistics, Port and shipping management, and LLM (Master of law) in Marine and also conducts various other courses.

Kochi Campus

It was felt that establishment of a Campus of the IMU at Kochi will go a long way in promotion of the maritime sector in particular and the economy of the country as a whole, and the coastal region in particular.[citation needed] The LNG Petronet Project and the Container Terminal Project at Vallarpadam would also be immensely benefited in terms of manpower training from the IMU Kochi Campus.[citation needed] IMU Kochi now offers the following academic programs:

  • MBA in Port and Shipping Management
  • MBA in International Transportation & Logistics Management
  • B.Sc. in Ship Building and Repair
  • Diploma in Nautical Science
  • PG. Diploma in Marine Engineering

Kolkata Campus

The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), is India's national institute for the training of marine engineers. It is India's oldest marine engineering college. It has been subsumed into the Indian Maritime University and is today, referred to as the Indian Maritime University Kolkata Campus.

Mumbai Campus

Inaugurated in year 1948-49, the Training Ship Chanakya (successor of T.S.Dufferin & T.S.Rajendra), the Marine Engineering & Research Institute and LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research were established.

Three legacy institutes T.S.Chanakya, Marine Engineering and Research Institute & LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research constitute the Indian Maritime University-Mumbai Campus.[4]

Visakhapatnam Campus

The IMU - Visakhapatnam Campus emerges from the confluence of the centrally established Indian Maritime University at Chennai and India’s premier ship design and maritime research institution ― The National Ship Design and Research Centre. Pioneered in the early 90’s by the Government of India, NSDRC has undertaken several milestone projects in the areas of Ship Design, Construction and Applied Research. The Visakhapatnam Campus consists of two schools, namely the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (SNAOE) and the School of Maritime Design and Research (SMDR).Three faculties joined as Assistant Professor in IMU Visakhapatnam during 2012-2013

  • Shri Avinash Godey, MTech (IMU Visakhapatnam)
  • Dr. Debabrata Karmakar, PhD (IIT Kharagpur)
  • Dr. J Siva Durga Prasad, PhD (Andhra University)

The School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering handles the academic Graduate and Post Graduate Programs of the University in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Dredging & Harbor Engineering. They are also involved in organizing short term courses and programs. The School has 140 students enrolled in the Undergraduate Program, 35 students in the Post Graduate Program and five students in the Post Doctoral Program.

The School of Maritime Design & Research, is a Research & Development Center of the university. This School handles several projects for the Ministry of Shipping, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Department of Science & Technology - Govt. of India. All the existing projects of National Ship Design and Research Center was transferred to SMDR after the confluence. The most recent activity[citation needed] of the School was the organising of an International Conference called Tech Samudra 2012, during 6th 7 & 8 December 2012.

Student Life at Visakhapatnam Campus:

The students have formed a students society - Naval Architecture Students Society (NASS), which organizes a wide spectrum of activities including Technical, Cultural and Sports Competitions. A major event organised by the students is the GOS Safety Program to spread awareness on Beach Safety in the month of November.[5]

La Ola is the students e-newsletter of the university.[6][7]

The students have formed several games leagues among themselves like the Institute Football League (IFL)Institute Ping Pong League(IPPL) Institute Cricket League(ICL) & Institute Basketball League (IBL).
