Jane Beryl Hawking (née Wilde, born 29 March 1944) is an English author and educator. She is the ex-wife of Stephen Hawking.[1]

Personal life

Hawking was born to Beryl (née Eagleton) and George Wilde. She grew up in St Albans, Hertfordshire and later studied languages.[2] She married Stephen Hawking in 1965, whom she had met through mutual college friends at a party[3] in their mutual hometown of St Albans. The couple had three children: Robert was born in 1967, Lucy 1969, and Timothy in 1979. After years of working on her doctoral thesis through Westfield College, she was able to attain her PhD in Medieval Spanish poetry in April 1981.[4] Jane and Stephen separated in 1990, and divorced five years later; she then married family friend and musician Jonathan Hellyer Jones.[5] Jane supported Stephen through his health problems for years as he continued to work.[6]

Later life

In 1999 she wrote an autobiography about her marriage to Stephen, Music to Move the Stars: A Life with Stephen. After the physicist separated from his second wife Elaine, he and Jane established a working relationship. In 2007, a heavily updated edition of the biography was published under the title Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.[2]

Wilde lives in England with her second husband, Jonathan.
