Jeanette Aw Ee-Ping (born 28 June 1979), also better known by her Chinese stage name Ou Xuan (欧萱), is a Singaporean television actress. Aw has won several popularity awards at MediaCorp's Star Awards including "Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste", "Favourite Female Character", "Favourite Onscreen Couple" and "Most Popular Regional Artiste". Aw received her "All time Favourite Artiste" in 2015 Star Awards Show 2 after winning Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste 10 times in Star Awards ceremony along the years though not consecutively. Despite her being the first of the seven princesses of Caldecott hill to get the 'All-time favourite Artiste Award', she still has not gotten any acting award.

In February 2012, Aw released her first book, Jeanette Aw: Definitions, about things that she thought of, things that she felt defined or described who she was and how her mind was wired. It was on the top of the best-selling list of all major bookstores. Later in March 2012, Aw published Jeanette Aw: Definitions(Limited Edition).

In May 2015, Aw released her second book, Sol’s World: Somebody to Love, which is about Sol’s Journey of self-discovery. She wakes up one day feeling as though something is missing in her life and goes on a journey to search for the answer. “Somebody to Love” is Jeanette Aw’s second publication. Jeanette explored her love for Art and attempts to express herself through this medium. The drawings are accompanied with a simple story and is something that both adults and children can enjoy.

Aw was the first and only Singapore celebrity and Mediacorp artiste to reach 1 million likes on her Facebook page.[1] Giving her a title as the Caldecott Hill’s social media queen as she won Singapore Blog Awards for the 7th time on 2015 and also won Star Awards "Social Media Award" in 2014 and 2015 respectively.[2][3]

Early life

Aw was born to parents with ancestry from Fujian, China. She has an elder sister and an elder brother. She was educated in Raffles Girls' Primary School, Crescent Girls' School, National Junior College. Aw graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Theatre Studies.

Career

2001–2002: Career beginnings

In 2001, Aw emerged champion (out of six contestants) in a talent search contest, "Route to Glamour", organised by the now defunct television network SPH MediaWorks. She was also awarded Best Performer and Best Newcomer in that same year she joined SPH MediaWorks. She was invited to co-star in a Taiwanese television drama later that year. She left SPH MediaWorks in early 2002 to continue her studies, and joined MediaCorp later that year. She starred as Fan Keke in Beautiful Connection, the highest rated television drama in Singapore in 2002. She also went to Taiwan again to film the idol drama Kiss of a Toast II. Aw won the Best Newcomer award in the Star Awards 2002.

2003–2005: Holland V and lead roles

In 2003, Aw starred in True Heroes as Chen Huimin, but her performance did not receive much attention. Later that year, she starred as Mo Jingjing, a girl with low IQ, in Holland V, the most watched television drama in Singapore in 2003. She gained popularity for playing Mo Jingjing and was nominated in the Star Awards 2003, but lost the award to her co-star Chen Liping. However, she won her very first Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award.

After the mega success of Holland V, Aw was seen as a possible successor of the Ah Jie (big sister) status. With her rising popularity, she also endorsed SK Jewellery. She starred in her first female lead role as Wen Qian in Spice Siblings alongside Tay Ping Hui and Cynthia Koh. Following that, she also starred in two more dramas – A Child's Hope II and The Champion. She was again nominated for Best Actress for her excellent performance in A Child's Hope II and also won the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award at Star Awards 2004.

In 2005, after two years of non-stop filming, Aw became less productive. In January, she starred as Fang Lixiang in My Lucky Charm alongside Huang Biren, who played her mother in the series. Aw only filmed one drama in 2005, The Rainbow Connection, where she played Ding Yingying, a talented dancer who has stage fright. This drama involved an ensemble cast with members not only from Singapore, but also from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. As Aw is also a dancer in real life, she acted in many dancing scenes in the drama.

Though Aw did not manage to garner a Best Actress nomination in the Star Awards 2005, she still managed to win her third Top 10 award.

2006–2009: Mediacorp 7 Princess

In the 476th issue's cover story of I-Weekly about Star Awards published in December 2006, the term "7 Princesses" was born. Aw was named as one of the Mediacorp 7 Princess along with Jesseca Liu, Felicia Chin, Fiona Xie, Rui En Joanne Peh and Dawn Yeoh.

In Star Awards 2006, Aw clinched her fourth Top 10 award. In January 2007, Aw filmed The Peak in which she played Zhong Xiao Yang, a ship construction worker who ended up in a wheelchair to save her boyfriend. The drama was filmed when Aw lost her godmother, and many expected her to be nominated for Best Actress but she did not manage to get back to the list once again. In July, she was involved in 'Switched!' starring opposite Fann Wong where she played Jiang Xinhui, a famous, wilful and materialistic actress.

2008–2009: Breakthrough with The Little Nyonya

Aw spent four months filming in China for The Shaolin Warriors. Then, she starred as Xiaorou in Rhythm of Life. Following that, she played Lin Keyi in The Defining Moment where she was praised for her good acting. Then came her big deserved opportunity: to star in MediaCorp's mega-blockbuster production, The Little Nyonya. Several actresses were auditioned for the role as the main lead actress. Aw got the role eventually. Despite criticism and speculation that she did not fit the role well initially, Aw proved her detractors wrong with her performance in both the role of a mother and daughter. The drama was such a huge success that it became the most watched drama in 15 years. Since then, Aw has gained much more fans and won several awards.

In the first half of 2009, Aw was busy with endorsements and events, as well as musical The Peranakan Ball, where she paired with Dai Xiangyu for the 2nd time. Other casts included Ann Kok and Tan Diya. In the 2nd half of the year, Aw acted in Together with Dai Xiangyu for the 3rd time. She also earned a Best Actress nomination for the drama.

2010–2014: The Dream Makers and more Highlights

In 2011, Aw just finished filming the Blockbuster drama Precious in China which consists 30 episodes. She plays the main lead role. She will once again be collaborating with Dai Xiangyu – the fifth time in three years. Precious is the remake of The Little Nyonya. But this time, Aw will be playing three roles instead of two roles. The three roles consist: mother Fang Xi Ruo and daughter Ling Qian Jin and Qian Jin's granddaughter. Filming of Precious ended in September 2011. She has also finished filming Rescue 995 as Shi Hao Ran. This role will be much different from her recent emotional roles. Shi Hao Ran is a good and righteous girl, and is very bubbly and cheerful always. Channel U drama Jump! is Jeanette's first attempt in a laugh-out-loud comedy, making it a surprising and challenging attempt.

Said to be Aw's second breakthrough drama, The Dream Makers is Channel 8's mid-year blockbuster, alongside a grand cast including Zoe Tay, Chen Li Ping, Chen Han Wei, Qi Yu Wu and Rui En, which features stories in a TV station, as celebration of MediaCorp's 50th anniversary. In the show, Aw plays a third line actress who tries hard to make her way to fame. After this show, Aw received lots of positive comments from viewers and compliments for veteran artiste such as Zoe Tay, Chen Han Wei, Bryan Wong and Xiang Yun which once again made Aw as Hot Favourite for Best Actress in Star Awards 20 but was beaten to fellow co-star Chen Liping once again after Star Awards 2003.

Aw was also involved in another blockbuster at the end of the year 2013: The Journey- A Voyage, which will mark her fifth and third collaboration with Elvin Ng and Joanne Peh respectively. Being named as the 21st century version of The Awakening, the show is being put under big expectations, with many hope will bring local TV to the next peak like The Little Nyonya did 5 years ago.

In the April 2013 online voting event of Singapore eAwards, Aw beat Fann Wong and the long time winner Rui En in winning the Most Popular Local TV Artiste Award, which again marks the high status she stands in the local entertainment industry. In 2014, once again Aw was voted as Most Popular Local TV Artiste Award for the second consecutive year beating fellow actress Rui En as Aw secured the top position since Day One,

In June 2013, Aw won the Singapore Blog Awards as the Most Popular Local Celebrity Blog/Microblog for the sixth consecutive times since 2008, beating artistes like Fann Wong and Ann Kok.

In 2014, Star Awards 20 Show 1, Jeanette clinched back 4 awards in total which includes Social Media Award and Most Popular Regional Artiste (Cambodia) and the most anticipated awards of the night, Favourite Female Character and Favourite Onscreen Couple together with her co-star Qi Yu Wu. It was a tough and close battle between Jeanette Aw and the three time winner, Rui En but Aw managed to get back her title as Favourite Female Character with her role as Zhao Fei Er in The Dream Makers since 2010 as Aw was the first winner since the award introduced. Aw is the first and only artiste to win 4 awards in a night ever since Star Awards was introduced and also the first and only artiste to win 5 awards in Star Awards in a year after she clinched her 10th Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste in Star Awards Show 2 making her the first Mediacorp 7 Princess to win All Time Favourite Artiste Award. Aw is also involved in the drama World at Your Feet, a drama revolving around the theme of football in celebration of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and The Journey: Tumultuous Times, the second part to the trilogy The Journey.

2015–present: All time Favourite Artiste and recent projects

In April 2015, after nabbing 6 awards at the Star Awards 2015 show 1, Aw expressed her wish to withdraw from voting-based award categories in the future. Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Aw said that the move is due to her concern about rabid fans who left messages online saying that they would harm themselves if she did not win enough awards.[4] Aw received her "All time Favourite Artiste" in 2015 Star Awards Show 2 together with Vivian Lai after winning Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste 10 times in Star Awards ceremony along the years. Aw unfortunately tripped on stage when she went to receive the award, making it even more memorable.

In upcoming May, Aw announced to open an art gallery and start filming upcoming drama The Dream Makers part 2. In July, Award-winning artiste and TV actress Jeanette Aw has been unveiled as the new face and spokesperson of skincare brand Bio-essence. Following in the footsteps of other internationally renowned talents such as Vivian Hsu and Linda Chung, the announcement comes in time to celebrate the brand’s latest launch: the Extra Strength Face Lifting Cream with Royal Jelly & ATP.

In upcoming November, Aw "working on flaws" for musical debut. The next television celebrity to take to the stage this year will be Jeanette Aw. Aw is set to make a return to the stage in a re-staging of Dick Lee and Michael Chiang’s iconic musical Beauty World. She will be playing the role of cabaret star Lulu, a vindictive cabaret queen in the latest restaging of the popular musical Beauty World, which opens in November at Victoria Theatre. The last time Aw appeared in a theatre production was back in 2009, in The Peranakan Ball, alongside Dai Xiang Yu and Ann Kok.[5][6][7]

Others

"Jeanius (Singapore)" is Aw's official fan club and was established on 29 December 2004. The club's name is derived from Jeanette’s name and the word "genius". It is the only Official Fan Club personally acknowledged by Aw herself. Over the years, the club work closely with Aw's management, Artiste Networks.[citation needed]
