John Brake (born 22 April 1988 in London, England) is a professional rugby union player for England Sevens in the IRB Sevens World Series. Brake's position of choice in the 15-a-side code is Scrum-half.

Club career

After joining the academy side at Northampton Saints in 2006, Brake went on to make his National League debut for the senior side against Bedford Blues in the RFU Championship (then known as National Division One) during the 2007–2008 campaign. He went on to make a further seven appearances throughout the season and scored a try against Launceston RUFC. At the end of his debut senior season Northampton achieved promotion back to the Guinness Premiership.

During the 2008–2009 season Brake made just one 1st team appearance for Northampton in an Anglo-Welsh Cup game against Bristol. He did however play on loan at Cambridge in National League 1 (then known as National Division Two) and also made a loan appearance for Rugby Lions.

After appearing off the bench for the 1st team in an LV Cup fixture against the Ospreys, Brake moved on loan to Birmingham and Solihull for the remainder of the 2009–2010 season and made 5 appearances in the Championship.

In August 2010 Brake was released by Northampton Saints and joined Birmingham and Solihull. He left the Bees at the end of the 2010–2011 season to pursue a central contract with the England Sevens side.

International career

Brake represented England as a schoolboy at Millfield at under-16 and under-18 levels. After leaving and joining Northampton he progressed to the under-20 side and made his debut for the national sevens team in San Diego in 2007. Since then he has featured fairly regularly for the sevens side and had played in 16 IRB Sevens tournaments by the end of the 2010–2011 season at which point he accepted a central contract with the team.

Brake was named captain of England Sevens for the 2012 European Sevens Grand Prix.
