Jomsom Airport (IATA: JMOICAO: VNJS) is an airport serving Jomsom,[1] a town in the Mustang District of the Dhawalagiri Zone in Nepal. It serves as the gateway to Muktinath temple, which is a popular pilgrimage for Nepalis and Indians.[3] The airport is capable to handle aircraft from the Nepalese Army Air Service.

Facilities

The airport resides at an elevation of 8,800 feet (2,682 m) above mean sea level.[1] It has one asphalt paved runway designated 06/24 which measures 720 by 19 metres (2,362 ft × 62 ft).[2]

Incidents

On 14 May 2012, Agni Air Flight CHT, a Dornier 228, crashed while attempting to land at Jomsom airport, killing 15 of 21 people on board.[9] The crash claimed the life of Indian child actress Taruni Sachdev.[10]

On 16 May 2013, Nepal Airlines Flight 555, a de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter, carrying 18 passengers and three crew, crashed on the bank of the Gandaki River. No one was killed, but seven people sustained serious injuries. Eight of the plane's passengers were Japanese tourists while the three crew members and remaining passengers were Nepali.[11]
