Joseph Farrall Wright
Joseph Farrall Wright (1827–1883) was a nineteenth century Anglican priest[1] who founded the historic English football club Bolton Wanderers.[2]
Wright was educated at St Bees Theological College and ordained in 1852.[3] After serving at Bolton-le-Moors[4] he came to Christ Church in Bolton[5] in 1871.[6] In 1874 he founded a football club with a teacher, Thomas Ogden,[7] from his church school for ex pupils[8] which in 1877 became Bolton Wanderers.[9] He was its first president.[10]
He died in June 1883:[11] his only son was John Wright, Archbishop of Sydney from 1909 until 1933.[12]
