Josephine Skriver (born April 14, 1993)[2] is a Danish model.

Early life

Skriver was born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her mother is an IT analyst and her father is a marine biologist. Both of her parents are gay and Skriver was conceived through IVF. She has a younger brother, Oliver, with whom she shares the same biological parents and who was also conceived through IVF.[5]

At the age of 15, Skriver was discovered and approached about her modeling potential while on a trip to New York with her soccer team. Shortly thereafter, she was signed by Unique Models, an international modeling agency based in Copenhagen. She was consequently approached by other agencies outside of Denmark, but decided to wait to stay in school. After finishing school, she began pursuing a modeling career in 2011.[6]

Career

Skriver's debut season was Fall/Winter 2011, during which she opened for Alberta Ferretti and closed for Prada. That season, she also walked for many other prominent designers, like Calvin Klein, rag & bone, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Alexander McQueen , Balenciaga, DKNY and Christian Dior.[7][8][9]

She has worked with Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia, Tim Walker for American Vogue, Greg Kadel for German Vogue, Terry Richardson for H&M and Patrick Demarchelier for Dior.

Skriver has appeared in catalogs for Victoria's Secret and since 2013, she has walked every consecutive year in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. In February 2016, it was announced that Skriver was officially one of the brand's contracted Angels.[12]

LGBT advocacy

Skriver has on numerous occasions spoken candidly about LGBT rights and openly disussed her own upbringing with both parents being members of the LGBT community.

Referencing the controversial comments about same-sex parents and babies conceived via IVF made in an interview with fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, in which Dolce said, "You are born to a mother and a father - or at least that's how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented wombs, semen chosen from a catalog," while Gabbana added, "the only family is the traditional one",[13] Skriver said: “I am human. I have the capacity to love and to be loved. I feel empathy. I have a mind that allows me to form opinions and to gain perspective on situations and the world around me. I am an opinion-former. I hurt. I feel joy. I feel gratitude. I am a daughter to two beautiful people, who both happen to be gay. I am a sister to a boy who is also human and who has the same capabilities as I do. I am a friend. I am a lover. I am a dreamer. I am certainly many things, but one thing I am not - is synthetic. There is no such thing as a synthetic human.” Adding that, “to me, family is a group of people bound by love” and her parents ”had a burning desire to bring life into this world, which is why they came together through a life-giving process and gave my brother and I the chance to be a part of this universe.” She went on to ask: ”Did my mother and father not deserve that joy because they are both gay themselves? Were they not allowed to feel the warmth of parenting? Were they not allowed the most basic of human rights — to create love?”[14][15][16]

In 2015, Skriver was made a celebrity ambassador for the Family Equality Council and it's Outspoken Generation Program, which aims to raise awareness about LGBTQ families.[16]

She has said that her ultimate goal is that her story will “not be that interesting soon, because that would mean that society has come to accept LGBT parents to be just as traditional and normal as any other way of having a family.”[17]
