Kurt Bundrock was born on 6 February 1917 in Berlin-Schöneberg. He joined the I. Gruppe of Zerstörergeschwader 1 (I./ZG 1 — 1st group of the 1st Destroyer Wing) as a radio operator on 1 May 1940. Together with the pilot Reinhold Knacke he participated in the Battle of France. Both of them transferred to night fighter force on 26 June 1940 and were assigned to the I.
