Kwak Dong-yeon (곽동연; born 19 March 1997), is a South Korean actor and a singer-trainee. He is best known for his supporting role in 2012 most popular family drama My Husband Got a Family which honored him as the Best Young Actor at the Korea Drama Awards. He is also known for his role as young Shin Jungtae in Inspiring Generation and his leading role in several special dramas, such as Adolescence Medley and Middle School Girl A. He is also a member of a band, Kokoma, where he plays lead guitar. He is professionally represented by FNC Entertainment.

Early life
Kwak Dong-yeon was born on 19 March 1997 in South Korea. He lived in Daejeon with his father, mother, and an older sister. Then, at the age of 13 he moved to Seoul by himself to pursue his dream to be an artist. Since 2010, Kwak has been studying music at FNC Academy, together with actor Song Se-hyun and members of N.Flying and AOA. While he initially studied the guitar and bass guitar, he later began taking lessons in acting.
On 26 February 2014, not long after Kwak finished his Inspiring Generation drama promotion, his mother died after suffering an illness.[1]
On 8 February 2013, he graduated from Munrae Junior High School, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.[2] He is currently attending School of Performing Arts Seoul.[3][4] Since early of 2014, he lives alone, after he lived in trainee dorm for four years.[5]
Career
Acting
Kwak Dong-yeon made his acting debut in 2012, appearing as Bang Janggoon in the KBS television series My Husband Got a Family. The drama was always ranked No. 1, reaching a 49.6 percent viewer rating.[6] In recognition of his work, Kwak was honored as the Best Young Actor at the 2012 Korea Drama Awards.[7][8]
In April 2013, Kwak appeared as young Prince Dongpyung in the SBS historical drama Jang Ok-jung, Living by Love.[9] The following month, he appeared as Choi Jeongwoo in the KBS Drama Special Adolescence Medley.[10] The drama was honored with the prize of Good Program of The Month from Korea Communications Standards Commission.[11]
In September 2013, Kwak began working on the KBS drama Inspiring Generation.[12][13] He portrayed young Shin Jung Tae in the first four episodes of the series, while subsequent appearances of the adult character was portrayed by Kim Hyun-joong. The drama was originally scheduled to air in November 2013, but due to the extensive overseas filming, the series was postponed to January 2014. Through his work on this series, Kwak received his first opportunity to film in China.[14][15][16]
On 19 March 2014, he got the lead role of KBS Drama Special Middle School Girl A which was broadcast on 6 April 2014. He portrayed Lee Haejoon, a smart transfer student who got bullied in his new school.[17]
In late August 2014, Kwak began working on SBS weekend drama Modern Farmer. He portrays Han Ki-joon, drummer of a rock band named Excellent Souls Band, which later moving to a village to farming. The drama first aired on 18 October 2014.[18][19]
It has been announced on 27 August 2014 on FNC Entertainment official Twitter that Kwak will make his big screen debut through movie Time Renegades (hangul: 시간이탈자). He's going to portray of the role of Seungbum.[20] The movie is about a man in the future and a man in the past competing for the same girl. It's expected to air in cinema in 2015.[21] Eventually, Kwak dropped out of film Time Renegades and was replaced by Lee Min-ho.
Music
Popularly considered as an actor, he is also known for his musical background and membership in Kokoma Band (꼬꼬마 밴드), as managed by FNC Entertainment.
Public was introduced to his musical talent through his contribution singing for the My Husband Got a Family drama OST "Ce Song" with Yoo Jun-sang and his on-screen father, Kim Sang-ho.[22] In November 2012, he sang "Fool" with his label-mate singer Juniel, in the wedding party of Kim Youngsan, FNC's Director of Entertainment Department.[23] In Adolescence Medley drama he also did cover song of Kim Kwang-seok's "Be Forgotten" and Lee Juck's "Running in The Sky".[24][25]
Kwak's identity as singer trainee has been revealed through his appearance on tvN's reality television show Cheongdam-dong 111.[26] He is the lead guitarist of Kokoma Band (꼬꼬마 밴드). The band's name means "little kids band". In addition to Kwak on lead guitar, the band members include Oh Hee-joon (is now a member of KNK) on vocals and guitar, Lee Hwee-chan on drums, and Seo Dong-sung (is now part of NEOZ Band) on bass guitar. The band was established three months before filming Cheongdam-dong 111. As mentees of CNBLUE, Kokoma Band won the trainee battle against F.T. Island's mentees.[27] For the battle, they performed "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by The Beatles.[28]
On 16 September 2014, once again Kwak collaborated with Juniel to cover song from Begin Again movie soundtrack, '"Lost Star" which uploaded in Juniel's official YouTube account.[29]
Variety shows
In the mid of 2014, Dongyeon guested on MBC Golden Fishery's Radio Star together with another child actors.[30] Through this show Dongyeon hit the top10 Daum online search twelve times within two days because of his awesome performance covering J-Rabit "요즘 너 말야" (read: yeo-jeum-neo-mar-ya, literal translation: About You, These Days). The show also revealed about him living alone which leads him to guest in another variety show MBC I Live Alone on early August and September 2014.[31]
Kwak also guested on SBS Running Man episode 210 as a supporter for FNC Entertainment team representative with Ji Suk-jin. On 23 August he filmed jTBC's Sleeping With Boss while doing his ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.[32] The Show later aired on 26 September.
It has been announced on 12 January 2015 that Kwak Dongyeon joined MBC new variety show Animals. The first episode is expected to air on January 25. It's the first variety show Kwak Dongyeon joins as a regular member.[33]
