The Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMA) was opened on 1 September 1939 in the city of Bishkek (formerly Frunze), Kyrgyzstan, with the recruitment of 200 students. The establishment of the institute was contributed to by the First Moscow Medical Institute, high medical schools of Saint-Petersburg, Almaty, Tashkent and other medical institutions. They provided expertise and organizational assistance, medical guidelines and training books as well as faculty staff.

About KSMA

During the years of its existence, the Medical Academy has trained foreign students from more than thirty countries. At present more than 12,000 students are studying at the Medical Institute, including 1,735 students from countries such as India, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United States, and Uzbekistan.

Instruction is in English and Russian.

The Medical Institute awards the degree of It is accredited, recognised and listed with the World Health Organization (WHO), Medical Council of Nepal,Medical Council of India (MCI) Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in the USA, IIME and the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), so its degree is recognized all over the world.

This gives institute graduates the ability to continue postgraduate education in other countries in America and Europe.

All clinical hospitals at the Medical Institute are equipped to train students. In particular, all types of diagnostics, thermovision, angiography, endoscopic technique, treatment by hyperbaric oxygenation, laser therapy, and modern efferent methods of de-toxication are taught here.

Foreign relations

Basic goals of the partnership are:

  • Training of teachers and development of educational programs for managers in the public health system, policymakers in public health system and practitioners, family physicians and nurses with higher education degree.
  • Implementation of two modeling family clinics (one city, another rural) that will form educational base for the КSМА and its curricula. Creation of conditions for programs implementation of healthy communities on sites of service of two modeling clinics.
  • Implementation on the clinical bases of clinical and administrative reports and programs, and also modeling strategy on strengthening health and diseases' prevention.

Under the partnership cooperation was launched between the КSМА and University of South Florida in the field of Public Health.

There is cooperation between the КSМА and the Clinic of Manual, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Zurich University with joint scientific and clinical researches, an exchange of experts, organization of joint discussions, international conferences and training.

The Plastination Centre in the academy was established under cooperation with the Institute of Plastination of the Heidelberg University (Germany). КSМА has a museum of plastination.

The Medical Academy has signed agreements of cooperation with Mudonzjan Medical Institute (the People's Republic of China), with Novosibirsk State Medical Academy (Russia), with Turkmen State Medical Institute (Turkmenistan) and with the second Tashkent State Medical Institute (Uzbekistan).

The Institute of Medicine prepares experts in three specialties:

  • Stomatology - five years,
  • Pediatrics - six years.

The program of General Medicine trains doctors (MD) with post diploma specialization. The institute offers both government supported training and on a contractual basis.

The curriculum of General Medicine include the following disciplines:

  • General educational;
  • Medical and biological;
  • Clinical; and
  • the major subjects:
    • Surgery - Pediatrics - Therapy - Microsurgery - Ophthalmology
    • Neurosurgery - Gynaecology - Vascular surgery - Venerealogy
    • Cardiology - Oncology - Allergology.

The Pediatric faculty studies features of children, preventive maintenance, diagnostics and treatment of children's diseases. The curriculum includes the following disciplines:

  • General educational;
  • Medical and biological;
  • Clinical; and
  • the specialized subjects:
    • Surgery - Children's Surgery - Therapy - Neonatology - Ophthalmology - Endocrinology - Oobstetrics and Gynecology - Cardiology - Venerealogy - Allergology - Oncology - Hematology - Pediatrics
    • Phthisiology.

The library has 400 000 books, with 16 branches and five reading halls. Apart from conventional books and journals, a CD-ROM facility having exhaustive electronic medical literature is available.

In 2005, the electronic library in KSMA was established. There are two reading halls with computers with medical education materials.
