Lakehill Preparatory School
Lakehill Preparatory School is a college preparatory school in the Lakewood neighborhood of east Dallas, Texas (U.S.). The school is accredited through a number of bodies including the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission, which works through the State Commissioner of Education.Currently, the school is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS), and is a member of the National Association of Independent schools (NAIS.)[1] During the 2011-2012 school year, the enrollment at Lakehill was 380 students.
The school was founded in 1971.[2] The main campus is located on Hillside Drive in the heart of Lakewood. The campus sits on 6 acres (24,000 m2) and houses classrooms, a gymnasium, an auditorium, two libraries, multiple science and computer labs, and the Charles J. Wyly, Jr. Auditorium. The 17-acre (69,000 m2) Roger L. Perry Campus is located just four miles (6 km) from the Main Campus. Built in 2001, this campus is home to the Warrior Athletic Complex and the Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center. The Environmental Center offers meeting spaces, classrooms, and laboratories. The Warrior Athletic Complex offers a football stadium, baseball field, softball field, four tennis courts, and a field house. Athletic events, off-season training, and extracurricular activities are held at the Warrior Complex throughout the year. In September 2009, Lakehill opened the Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center, a 6,500-square-foot (600 m2) silver LEED certified building.[3]
On Sunday, March 1, 2009, a fire broke out in the school's gym. Although the fire had rendered the gym unusable, a new state-of-the-art gymnasium was opened in September 2009.
In 2011, the school celebrated its 40th anniversary, and hosted its first ever homecoming parade in October 2011.[4]
Athletics
Lakehill offers football, basketball, volleyball, cross country, track, baseball, golf, and tennis to students in grades 7-12. Cheerleading is also offered from the sixth grade through high school. The teams usually compete in division 1 football and TAPPS.[4]
Acceptances
Recent acceptances to colleges have been Brown University, Duke University, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Texas. The twenty-one of the Class of 2012 were admitted to more than 85 colleges and universities. 100% of the Class of 2013 have been enrolled in AP (Advanced Placement) classes during their upper school career.
Arts
Lakehill offers Choir, Theater, Visual Arts, and uses the Charles J. Wyly auditorium.
Campus
The main campus is located on Hillside Drive in the Lakewood Neighborhood. The main campus features the main school building, the auditorium, and the Lakehill gymnasium. The original gym was burned in a three alarm fire caused by the exhaust fan in the gym on Sunday, March 1, 2009. P.E. classes were moved to the cafeteria while the gym was renovated, repainted and reopened for the 2009-2010 school year. The Charles J. Wyly auditorium has a maximum capacity of 560. Originally a church, it was renovated in 2000, and from 2009-2010, the theater underwent a partial overhaul; the sound system, projector, and theater lights were upgraded. It is used for musicals, special events, assemblies, and performances of the arts. The main school building is three stories and is occupied by all grades, with lower school in the first and second floor, upper school in the second floor, and middle school on the top floor. Included in the main building are the libraries, computer labs, classrooms, offices, and locker rooms. Lakehill also has the Warrior sports complex, located away from the main campus. This complex is mainly used for athletics and science, with the complex offering a baseball field, a softball field, a football stadium with a newly upgraded scoreboard, a field house with locker rooms and sports equipment, tennis courts, and the Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center, recently constructed in 2009-10. The science center can act as a meeting location, and several classes at Lakehill use the facility. The complex also has acres of woods, allowing students to study and observe wildlife with wide-open spaces.
