Libon is a voice-over-Internet Protocol and instant messaging application developed for Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Android by Orange S.A.’s subsidiary, Orange Vallée. The application can also be used on iOS and Android. Libon users can call and instant message their contacts for free on any 3G or Wi-Fi network. The app also offers visual voicemail and custom voicemail greetings based on contact groups. Although Orange developed Libon, it is available for free on the Apple App Store in 90 countries, including in countries where Orange does not have a presence, such as the United States.

The name is an abbreviation of the original name "Life is Better ON". All versions of the app have included "ON" or "Libon" in their names.

History

Libon was launched in beta for testing in November 2009 before the LeWeb conference. The first version of the app was called "ON Address Book", and was only available on Android.

In March 2011, Orange launched "ON Voicefeed" at the DEMO conference - a visual voicemail iOS app enabling its users to personalize their voicemail greetings by recording them or type them (text-to-speech feature).[1]

On 21 November 2012, Orange added the VoIP feature, updated the UI of the service and rebranded it to "Libon".[2] The new service was announced by Stéphane Richard at the Hello! show.[3]

Features

Voice on IP calls

Libon allows its users to make free VoIP calls to all the other users who installed the application on their devices.

Libon Out calls

The Libon Out calls allow you to call landlines and mobiles in more than 100 destinations. These calls can be made to phones on which Libon application is not installed.[4]

Instant messaging

Libon includes an instant messaging service that allows Libon users to send text messages, audio messages, localization and photos.

Open Chat

The Open Chat technology was developed by Orange Valley especially for Libon. Thanks to this technology, Libon is the first messaging app that allows to its users to send messages, audio contents and photos to all their contacts, even if they do not have the app installed on their devices.

This brand new service works using a Libon app developed in HTML5, a programming language that can be understood by almost all web browsers. The contact that do not have Libon installed on his device is automatically redirected to this web application that do not need a registration to be used.

Customized voicemail

The Libon application is equipped with an evolved voicemail. This voicemail allows users to customize their greeting messages depending on their group of contacts that can be directly defined in the application. These greeting messages can be written and automatically transcribed in voice.

Audio messages left on the voicemail of a Libon user can be automatically transcribed into text, and appear in the discussion thread with all the instant messages sent by the calling contact.

Countries and languages

Libon is available on the App Store and the Google Play Store. The app is currently available in many languages, but for now the voices used for message transcription and customized greetings are only available in English, French and Spanish.
