Before the French Revolution, the municipality of Bordeaux was headed by the jurat (French: Jurat). In 1794, the first mayor of Bordeaux (French: maire de Bordeaux) was elected.

From 1794, the Mayor of Bordeaux was chosen by the City council until 1871. Since 1871, under provisions of new local administration law, and the Mayor of Bordeaux is chosen by popular election every six years.
