This is a list of works of fiction set largely or wholly in 1997.

Literature

• The satire Memoirs of the Twentieth Century (1733) takes the form of a series of diplomatic letters written in 1997 and 1998.
• In the 1916 short story Enoch Soames by Max Beerbohm, the title character makes a deal with the Devil. In exchange for his soul, he is transported exactly 100 years forward in time to 2:10 pm on June 3, 1997, in order to spend one afternoon in the Reading Room of the British Museum to determine what his legacy will be.
• A Scourge of Screamers (1968) takes place in 1997, two years after a nuclear war eliminated all national governments.
• The graphic novel V for Vendetta (1982–1989) by Alan Moore takes place in a dystopian United Kingdom from November 5, 1997 to November 5, 1998.
• The Interior (1999) by Lisa See takes place in the People's Republic of China during the summer of 1997.
• Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years (1999) by Sue Townsend takes place from April 30, 1997 to May 2, 1998. The early sections of the novel depict New Labour's landslide victory in the UK general election on May 1, 1997.

• Crimes of the Future (1970) takes place in 1997.
• Escape from New York (1981) takes place in 1997, by which time Manhattan Island in New York City has been converted into a maximum security prison.
• Predator 2 (1990) takes place in Los Angeles, which is experiencing a turf war between Colombian and Jamaican drug cartels, in 1997.
• The final scene of The Godfather Part III (1990) takes place in 1997.
• According to Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), the artificial intelligence Skynet was activated on August 4, 1997. It became self-aware at 2:14 am on August 29, 1997, and launched nuclear weapons at Russia, leading to a counterattack on the United States. In the ensuing nuclear war, three billion people were killed. The survivors subsequently referred to August 29, 1997 as Judgment Day. Using its Terminators, Skynet tried to exterminate the remainder of humanity. In Terminator 2, the Terminator, Sarah Connor and John Connor seemingly prevented Judgment Day from coming to pass. However, it was revealed in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) that their efforts had merely postponed it until July 25, 2004.
• Hong Kong 97 (1994) depicts the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China.
• In Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Austin Powers is placed in cryostasis in 1967 and revived in 1997.
• The Queen (2006) depicts the aftermath of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales on August 31, 1997.
• The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) partially takes place in 1997.
• Both Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010) take place in 1997.
• The second half of The Debt (2010) takes place in 1997.
• The short film Disco (2010) takes place on July 14, 1997.
• Turbo Kid (2015) takes place in an alternate history dystopian version of 1997.

• In the 1956 Conflict episode "Man from 1997", a Polish janitor named Johnny Vlakoz (Jacques Sernas) finds an Almanac of America dated 1997 which had been accidentally left in the 1950s by a librarian named B.O. Boyne (Charlie Ruggles) from the future.
• In the science fiction series Lost in Space (1965–1968), the Jupiter 2 was launched on October 16, 1997.
• The 1989 Doctor Who serial Battlefield takes place in 1997. By this time, the United Kingdom has a king.
• The anime series Dragon Ball Z took place in 1997.

Computer and video games

• Robotron: 2084 (1982) takes place partially in 1997.
• Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders (1988) takes place in 1997.
• Like the aforementioned film of the same name, Hong Kong 97 (1995) depicts the events surrounding the transfer of Hong Kong's sovereignty in 1997.
• Grand Theft Auto (1997) takes place in 1997.

Audio drama

• In the Doctor Who Big Finish audio drama The Rapture, the Seventh Doctor and Ace visit Ibiza from May 14 to 15, 1997.
• In the Doctor Who Big Finish audio drama Sympathy for the Devil, an alternative version of the Third Doctor visits Hong Kong shortly before the transfer of sovereignty to China on July 1, 1997.
