Parliamentary elections were held in Lithuania on 10 October 2004, with the second round on 24 October 2004. All 141 seats in the Seimas were up for election, 71 of them in single-seat constituencies based on majority voting; the remaining 70, in a nationwide constituency based on proportional representation. Altogether, around 600 candidates competed in the single-seat constituencies, while over 1,100 candidates were included in the electoral lists for the nationwide constituency.[1]

Labour Party won the elections with about 28 per cent of the vote in the nationwide constituency and 39 seats in the Seimas, far short of the 71-seat majority. The party had campaigned on the promise of higher living standards and war on political corruption.[1]

The coalition "Working for Lithuania", consisting of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and New Union (Social Liberals), received 20.7 per cent of the vote and 31 seats in total. The coalition had campaigned on its track record over the previous three and a half years in power, as well as promises of economic growth, increased salaries and pensions.[1]

Labour Party, the Social Democrats, the Union of Peasants and New Democracy, and the New Union (Social Liberals) formed the coalition after the elections.[2]
