Luis Leonardo Almagro Lemes (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈlwis alˈmaɣɾo]; born June 1, 1963) is a Uruguayan lawyer, diplomat and politician. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 and is currently the Secretary General of the Organization of American States.

Background and earlier life

He studied at the University of the Republic in Montevideo. He has long been politically affiliated with the Uruguayan Broad Front (Frente Amplio).

He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2015, serving under President José Mujica.[1][2]

Secretary General of the OAS

He was elected Secretary General of the Organization of American States on March 18, 2015, and officially took office on May 26, 2015.[3]
