Luis Gabriel Aguilera
Luis Gabriel Aguilera was a teacher at Bronzeville Scholastic Institute (part of the Chicago Public Schools) who was fired in 2009. Aguilera claimed that he was fired because of a memoir he had published nine years previously, which chronicles his experiences as a young Mexican immigrant and details a relationship he had with a teacher in the Chicago Public School system while he was a minor, while the Board of Education of the City of Chicago maintains that Aguilera was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with a female student. [1][2][3] In September 2014, Judge Virginia M. Kendall ruled in a summary judgement against Aguilera, siding with the Board of Education of the City of Chicago. Kendall wrote that the board did not violate Aguilera's right to due process, nor did it violate Aguilera's First Amendment right to free speech. Judge Kendall ruled that Aguilera was fired on the basis of the inappropriate relationship he had with his student, and not on the basis of his memoir, and therefore the termination of Aguilera's employment was lawful.
Aguilera has also written about activism and the Chicago Public Schools[4] and is an electronic music DJ.[5][6][7]
