The MGH Institute of Health Professions (or simply The MGH Institute) is a graduate university of health sciences founded by Massachusetts General Hospital and located in the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts.[5] Its academic programs include the subject areas of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant studies, Nursing, Communication Sciences & Disorders and Health Professions Education.

History

From 1873 until 1981, Massachusetts General Hospital operated the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, granting diplomas in nursing only. In 1977, the State of Massachusetts authorized the hospital system to grant academic degrees, and that same year the Massachusetts General Hospital Academic Division was launched.[1]

The program was renamed MGH Institute of Health Professions in 1980, admitting its first cohort of students. The first degrees granted were Masters of Science in Physical Therapy with the first class graduating in 1983. The school began admitting its first entry-level Master of Nursing Science students in 1982. In 1985, MGH Institute of Health Professions was re-constituted as a separate corporation from Massachusetts General Hospital.[1] It began admitting students into its first PhD program (Rehabilitation Sciences) in 2012. The Institute has an alumni base of over 4,500 worldwide.[1]

Academics

Program areas

The MGH Institute offers a single undergraduate degree—an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The rest of its academic programs focus on various graduate degrees, including clinical doctorates such as the Doctorates of Physical Therapy and Nursing Practice, Master's degrees in Nursing and Speech-Language Pathology and a PhD of Rehabilitation Sciences.[2] Established in 2013, the Institute's entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program is the first of its kind in New England.[6]

Other programs include graduate certificate offerings, several non-degree course options, and Certificates of Advanced Study in the health professions.[2]

Rankings and accreditation

The MGH Institute's physical therapy graduate program and program in Speech-Language pathology were ranked the 7th-best programs of their kind by U.S. News & World Report in its most recent tables. The Institute's graduate program in nursing was ranked 64th overall.[7]

The Institute itself and its various programs are all accredited by their corresponding accreditation bodies, including the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.[8][9]

The Institute's student body is 85 percent female, and 62 percent are enrolled as full-time students. The graduation rate for the school is high, with over 98 percent matriculating through to the end of their degree program. Non-degree seeking students, including those in continuing health professions education courses, account for roughly 18 percent of the total student enrollment.[2] The Institute reports that, in 2012, the percent of applicants offered admission was 38 percent, and the student to faculty ratio was 8:1.[2]

Facilities

Given the small size of the Institute's campus and student population, it does not operate many of the typical facilities associated with larger universities. For example, MGH does not have its own library. Instead, all MGH Institute students have full access to the Treadwell Library, which is owned by Massachusetts General Hospital and shared with Harvard Medical School.[11][12] The Institute does not have on-campus dorms.[13]

The Institute does, however, have over 100,000 square feet of classroom and laboratory space at its campus, including space for pro-bono rehabilitation centers, simulation labs and general faculty and student research.[5]
