Malaysia and the United Nations is a multilateral relations between Malaysia and the United Nations.

History

Since the existence of the organisation, the Federation of Malaya expressed an interest in joining the United Nations, and did so on 17 September 1957.[citation needed] Following a merger between Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo and Sarawak on 16 September 1963, it was later renamed Malaysia.[1] However, less than two years after the merger, Singapore was expelled from the federation and joined the United Nations by itself on 21 September 1965.[1]

Role in the United Nations

Malaysia plays an active role within the organisation with participation in almost all peace-keeping missions conducted by the organisation such as on the United Nations Operation in the Congo, the Protection Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Transition Assistance Group in Namibia, the operation in Somalia, the mission in East Timor and the Interim Force in Lebanon.[2]

UN Security Council

Currently, Malaysia is serving a two-year term in the Security Council after being elected in 2014 election. This is the fourth time that Malaysia has been elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. The first was in 1965, the second in 1989 and the third in 1999.

Financial contribution

Malaysia contributed $7.9 million to the United Nations yearly budget in 2014.[3]
