Blessed Maria Bolognesi (21 October 1924 – 30 January 1980) was a Roman Catholic Italian layperson. Throughout her life she suffered from debilitating diseases. She was beatified in 2013 by Cardinal Angelo Amato on behalf of Pope Francis.[1]

Biography

Maria Bolognesi was born in 1924 in Rovigo and received the name of her stepfather. She grew up in a poor family and was only able to attend the first two years of primary education, often being marginalized by her peers. She dropped out of school as a child in order to work to support her family and worked as an agricultural laborer.

She was said to have received a vision of Jesus Christ bestowing upon her three rings and five rubies which was a representation of the Five Wounds. Bolognesi suffered from several debilitating conditions. Additionally, she looked after orphans and assisted children whose parents were unemployed. She would also visit the sick frequently in hospitals.

Bolognesi died of a heart attack in 1980 and her remains were later transferred to the parish of Bosaro - her hometown.

Beatification

Her reputation for holiness spread and led to the commencement of her cause of beatification under Pope John Paul II on 18 February 1992 which allowed for the title of Servant of God to be bestowed upon her. Pope Benedict XVI recognized her heroic virtues and proclaimed her to be Venerable on 10 May 2012. A miracle said to have been attributed to her intercession led to a tribunal opening to investigate. That process spanned from 23 September 2004 to 13 December 2005. Pope Francis recognized the miracle on 2 May 2013 and Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the beatification rites on 7 September 2013.
