Marion is a town in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The population was 1,305 at the 2000 census.

History

The town was named for Francis Marion, a military leader known as the "Swamp Fox".

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,305 people, 468 households, and 324 families residing in the town. The population density was 448.7 people per square mile (173.1/km²). There were 555 housing units at an average density of 190.8 per square mile (73.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 52.87% White, 45.82% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.69% of the population.

There were 468 households out of which 42.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 28.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 70.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 62.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $26,413, and the median income for a family was $28,438. Males had a median income of $27,778 versus $17,303 for females. The per capita income for the town was $10,504.
