Martin Andrew Paterson (born 10 May 1987) is a professional footballer who plays for the Northern Ireland national football team as a striker for Blackpool.

He has previously played for Stoke City, Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United, Burnley and Orlando City. Although he was born in England, he has chosen to represented Northern Ireland at international level and has been capped at U21 and senior level.

Career

Stoke City

Born in Tunstall, Staffordshire,[1] Paterson failed a trial at nearby Port Vale at the age of nine, but quickly joined the Stoke City academy.[3] Paterson made his debut for Stoke as a late substitute for Chris Greenacre in the 2–0 win over Plymouth Argyle on 16 April 2005. His first start came in March 2006 against Leeds United and he hit his first goal six months later, against Sheffield Wednesday.[4] He made a total of 12 league appearances (two starts) before moving to Grimsby on loan in November 2006, initially for a month.

On loan at Grimsby in League Two, he scored on his club debut – 25 November 2006 against Accrington Stanley. Grimsby extended his loan stay for an extra two months. In February 2007, Paterson returned to parent club Stoke City after serving the maximum stay at Grimsby.

Scunthorpe United

In the summer of 2007, Paterson was signed by Scunthorpe United manager Nigel Adkins as a replacement for the departed Billy Sharp.[5]

He scored on his full début for Scunthorpe, putting the side 1–0 up before they lost 2–1 to League One side Hartlepool United in the League Cup.

On 2 November 2007, Paterson's record of seven goals in 11 starts saw him get a first call-up to the senior Northern Ireland squad for the matches against Denmark and Spain.[6]

On 29 January 2008, Norwich had a £850,000 bid for Paterson rejected by Scunthorpe.

In May 2008, Burnley had an offer of £400,000 rejected, which was then increased on 27 May 2008 to £550,000. This offer was also rejected on the same day. Paterson had a written transfer request rejected, and said the club had gone back on their word.[7]

On 21 June 2008, it was revealed by Scunthorpe United that they had accepted a £1 million bid from Burnley, which would rise to £1.3 million depending on appearances. The deal included add ons and a 20% sell on fee.

Burnley

On 23 June 2008 Paterson signed a four-year contract with Burnley. In his first season with the Clarets, he was the top scorer, scoring 19 goals in all competitions, helping the side to a League Cup semi-final and promotion to the Premier League after a play-off win over Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium.

On 22 September 2009, in a League Cup game against Barnsley, Paterson tore his medial knee ligament and therefore missed three months of the season. This injury came just days after Burnley midfielder Chris McCann tore a similar ligament. Paterson scored his first Premier League goal on 21 February 2010 against Aston Villa in a 5–2 loss. He also scored in Burnley's 4–2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the 2009–10 season.

On 4 June 2010, Paterson signed a new 3-year contract at Burnley. Paterson picked up a thigh injury in November 2010 which kept him out over Christmas however the injury re-occurred in a game against Doncaster Rovers on 1 February 2011 which ruled the striker out for the rest of the season.[8] Paterson finished the 2010-11 season making 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring 3 times.

Paterson was again plagued by injury during the 2011-12 campaign with a thigh problem picked up in August keeping him out until December and then a pulled hamstring picked up in the January victory at Middlesbrough keeping him out until the middle of February. Paterson ended the 2011-12 season making 14 appearances for Burnley, scoring 3 goals. However, during the 2012-13 Paterson appeared in all bar 7 of Burnley's league fixtures, scoring 8 goals in 39 appearances.

Despite ongoing reports that Paterson was about to sign a new contract at Burnley, Paterson rejected Burnley's contract offer and chose to leave the club. Burnley Manager, Sean Dyche, had mostly played Paterson as a winger during the 2012–2013 season and it was Paterson's desire to be deployed in his favoured position of centre forward that was his reason for leaving the club.[9]

Huddersfield Town

Now a free agent, on 25 June 2013 Paterson opted to join Burnley's Football League Championship rivals Huddersfield Town, signing a two-year contract and becoming the West Yorkshire club's third signing ahead of the 2013–14 season.[10] Paterson made his début for the club in their 1–0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on 3 August. In October 2013, Paterson along with team mate Adam Clayton were dropped for the game against Leeds United amid rumours of a training ground bust-up between the pair where Paterson was alleged to have punched Clayton.[11] On 23 November 2013, Paterson was re-instated to the first team for the Yorkshire derby against rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium, in which he scored his first goal of the season, set-up by Clayton, following the goal Paterson celebrated by re-enacting a 'mock-fight' with Clayton. Following the game Paterson stated how he and Adam Clayton had patched up their differences and were friends again [12]

After finding himself relegated to the bench and struggling to force his way into the starting 11 in the second half of the 2013-14 season, he joined Bristol City on loan for the rest of the season on 15 March 2014 where he made 8 appearances scoring one goal. In May 2014 he withdrew from Northern Ireland's squad in order to focus on pre-season for Huddersfield Town citing a few issues with injury during the 2013-14 season as his reasoning.[13]

Paterson was determined to force his way back into the Huddersfield Town team in time for the 2014-15 season and started pre-season brightly scoring a penalty against AEL Limassol on 12 July 2014, however a knee injury picked up towards the end of pre-season put the striker out of contention until September 2014. [14] Paterson made his first start of the season, as substitute, against Blackpool on 18 October 2014, however once again Paterson struggled to cement a regular place in the first team and after making only 3 appearances in the 2014-15 season for Huddersfield Town on 13 November 2014 he joined Football League One side Fleetwood Town on loan until 3 January 2015.[15] Injury cut short his loan, after only 3 appearances, and he returned to Huddersfield on 4 December 2014.[16]

Orlando City

On 26 January 2015, it was announced that Paterson had signed on loan with MLS side Orlando City until the end of June 2015.[17] Paterson joined up with the Orlando City squad for pre-season training in February 2015 however he picked up a hamstring injury which sidelined him for the first 2 and a half months of the season. Paterson went on to make only a combined total of 37 minutes in 3 appearances for Orlando City due to injury which put his chances of a permanent move to the club in jeopardy.[18] On 5 May 2015 Huddersfield Town published the clubs retained list which stated that Paterson would be released at the end of his contract on 30 June 2015.[19] Following the expiration of his contract Paterson signed permanently with Orlando SC.[citation needed] However, due to a "severe breach of club policy" which followed shortly thereafter, Orlando City terminated Paterson's contract on 5 August.[20]

Blackpool

Paterson joined League One side Blackpool on 14 September 2015.[21]

International career

Born in England, Paterson qualified for England, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland at international level due to his Northern Irish heritage. Paterson chose to represent Northern Ireland and has played for the nation at both Under 21 and Senior level, so far he holds 2 caps for the Under 21's and 15 caps scoring once for the senior side as of 2013.[22]

Paterson made his senior team début in a 1–0 away loss to Spain coming on as a 72nd-minute substitute in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying Group F on 17 November 2007.[23] Paterson's first international goal came with an 84th-minute penalty to earn Northern Ireland in a 3–3 friendly draw against Finland national football team at Windsor Park on 15 August 2012.[24] He scored his second international goal one year later, on 14 August 2013 in the World Cup 2014 qualification win against Russia.[25]
