Marvelyne Fatima Wiels[2] (born 15 May 1963) is since 2013 the Minister Plenipotentiary of Curaçao. In that capacity she is stationed in The Hague and is a member of the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom.[3]

Personal life

Wiels was born on 15 May 1963 and a sister of the murdered politician Helmin Wiels. She is a single mother of 2 children.[1]

Minister Plenipotentiary

Wiels has received criticism for errors in her cv, amongst others relating to a MSc title, as well as the nature of her work at ABN AMRO.[4][5] Also her management of the Curaçaohuis, the representation of Curaçao in the Netherlands, which falls under her responsibility, was criticized. Criticism in the latter case was related to nepotism and harassment of her deputy.[6][7] A report of the Ombudsman of Curaçao[8][9] regarding the criticism resulted in a motion of the parliament of Curaçao "to immediately replace her" did not gain a majority.[10][11]

During the formation of the second cabinet of Prime Minister Ben Whiteman in November 2015 the Party for the Restructured Antilles (PAR) was willing to join the coalition if Wiels would resign. Wiels' party Sovereign People declined this request. The PAR was then offered the post of deputy Minister Plenipotentiary and it joined the new governing coalition.[12]
