Medici.tv is an online platform for streaming classical music videos, created in 2008. The medici.tv catalog consists of approximately 1500 films available by subscription, as well as hundreds of events which are broadcast live for free every year. Replays are available for several weeks after each live event.[1][2]

History

After filming and broadcast the Verbier Festival in 2007, the medici.tv video platform officially launched in May 2008. This launch is accompanied by several live events – the concert of the New York Philharmonic, the classical music festival in Aspen and the Opera Festival in Aix-en-Provence – before the broadcast of the Verbier Festival, 2008.

In 2009, medici.tv won Best Internet Music Service in 2008 at the Midem Classical Awards.

In 2013, the site recorded 1.5 million unique visitors.[3] At Verbier Festival, which was broadcast live during the same year, the platform boasted 750,000 connections from 177 countries.

Near the end of 2014 medici.tv broadcast four classical concerts from New York's Carnegie Hall. This is the first time the Carnegie Hall concerts were filmed and broadcast on the internet live.[4][5]

From 15 June to 3 July 2015, medici.tv has broadcast live the entire XV International Tchaikovsky Competition, a contest featuring the most prestigious of classical musicians.[6] Of the four disciplines of the competition (piano, violin, cello and vocals), 120 candidates were followed through the different stages of the competition in Moscow and St. Petersburg.[7]

The catalogue

The catalogue consists of approximately 1500 features related to baroque, classical, romantic, modern and contemporary. Several types of program are available: operas, concerts, ballets, archives and documentaries.

Live broadcasts

Medici.tv broadcasts hundreds of live events a year that are then available for replay. They have broadcast from Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, the Paris Opera and many more. Examples of broadcast:

  • Alan Gilbert conducting the New York Philharmonic in the Volkswagen plant in Dresden[8][9]
  • Marion Cotillard as Joan of Arc at the stake at the Auditorium of Barcelona

Summer Festivals

Every year medici.tv broadcasts the concerts of several festivals such as the Verbier Festival, Salzburg Festival, Annecy Classic Festival, International Festival of Lyric Art of Aix-en-Provence and the Lucerne Festival. Examples of concerts from these festivals:

  • Mozart’s Requiem conducted by Claudio Abbado at the Lucerne Festival Opening Concert
  • Jonas Kaufmann interpreting Verdi's Don Carlo at Salzburg Festival[10]

Medici.tv is available on the internet, mobiles and tablets (iOS and Android), connected TV, Blu-ray and Samsung Smart TV.
