History

Metiabruz has a rich history. The Nawab of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, took refuge here when he was ousted by the British from his throne, and attempted to build a replica of his palace in Matiaburj.[4] It is sometimes called the 'Second Lucknow'.[5] The Imambara he created stands at the centre of Matiaburj.

Geography

The area is connected with central Kolkata by road, through the Circular Garden Reach Rd, a 40 min drive. This road ends at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Borough Committee 15 office. And from here its name changes to Wajid Ali Shah road which goes to the Metiaburj Police Station and from here it divides into the S. A. Farooqui Road and the Wajid Ali Shah Road, the main arterial roads of the place. The well-known Botanical Gardens of Shibpur are located just across the Hooghly river. Another local district, Howrah, is well connected with Matiaburj through a frequent ferry and boat service.

Industry

Matiaburj is a key industrial location, with the Southern Thermal Power Station (coal) and a water pumping station that supplies water to major parts of the city. It also has a shipyard, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, founded in 1884, that is engaged in making warships of Indian Navy and Coast Guard, and is home to one of the largest textile manufacturers in India.[citation needed]. The area is largest producer of non branded garments in India. The haat bazaar (weekly market) here is the largest in India.[citation needed] Another key area of employment in the city are brick-kilns, which generally employ daily wage workers. Matiaburj is also famous for being the largest kite manufacturer in the world.[citation needed]

Population and Linguistics

The population of Metiabruz consists mainly of Muslim (75%).[citation needed] The main spoken languages include Urdu, Hindi and Bengali. It is home to a large number of unskilled labourers that settled here from rural areas in West Bengal and Bihar, who are employed on a daily wage; this includes construction workers, cleaners, plumbers, and painters.[citation needed]

Education

Education in Metiabruz does not feature highly on the local government agenda[citation needed] although Metiabruz recently got a college named 'Metiabruz College' under Calcutta University but only for Arts and the subjects offered Are Urdu, English, Hindi, History, Political Science and Education and Honours only in Political science and Urdu. However, off late interest in education is rising among the middle class Muslim population. Numerous privately owned schools (English Medium)and Government aided schools have come up.

Pollution and Sanitation

Due to the huge concentration of population, sanitation is a big problem and it has always remained an issue among political parties during election."Katcha Toilets" are still found in some areas. Broken drains and nallas create a messy condition during rainy season.
