Mick Thomson (born November 3, 1973)[1] is an American heavy metal musician. He is best known as being the lead guitarist in the Grammy Award-winning band Slipknot.
Biography
Thomson was born in Des Moines, Iowa. In his youth, he performed in bands such as Body Pit. Thomson joined Slipknot in 1996, replacing the band's guitarist, Craig Jones, who then became the band's sampler. He shares rhythm and lead guitar roles with bandmate Jim Root.
When performing with Slipknot, Thomson is known as "Number Seven", being that the band follows a numbering scheme for its members, ranging from 0–8. His number is also tattooed on his left arm, as "seven", which can be seen in music videos such as Dead Memories. According to Shawn Crahan, Thomson wanted number 7, because it is his lucky number.[2] During his interview from Voliminal: Inside the Nine, he has stated that he suffers from severe joint and back pain, which on one occasion temporarily left him unable to walk, and causes him difficulty when performing.
On October 5, 2012, he married his longtime girlfriend, Stacey Riley.[3]
On March 11, 2015, it was reported that Mick and his younger brother Andrew had been hospitalized after a drunken altercation resulted in the two getting into a knife fight with one another. Mick was stabbed in the head during the altercation but both men's injuries, although described as serious, were not life threatening. [4] On March 21, 2015, both Mick and Andrew were charged with disorderly conduct, with a court date set for March 30, 2015.
