Michael R. "Mike" Cooney (born September 3, 1954) is the 32nd Lieutenant Governor of Montana. He previously served as a Democratic member of the Montana Senate, representing District 40 from 2002 to 2010, and was the President Pro Tempore. From 1988 until 2000, he was the Secretary of State of Montana serving three terms. In 2000, Cooney ran in the Democratic primary for Governor of Montana, but lost to Mark O'Keefe, who went on to lose the general election to Judy Martz. He began his career in elected office serving as a member of the Montana House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981, He also served as the Administrator of the Workforce Services Division at the Montana Department of Labor and Industry and in 2010, he was named as the Interim Director of the Montana Historical Society.[1]

Selection as Lieutenant Governor

On December 30 2015, Montana Governor Steve Bullock described Cooney as an "accomplished leader" who will bring "values" to state government. Bullock served as chief legal counsel for Cooney when he was secretary of state. Cooney has known and worked with Bullock for 20-plus years. This will be Bullock's third lieutenant governor in his four-year term. Cooney's predecessor, Angela McLean, announced Nov. 30 that she was taking a job with the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, leaving Gov. Steve Bullock to find a new No. 2 for his re-election bid next year. This is the continuation of a political family dynasty as his grandfather, Frank Cooney, served as Montana's ninth governor from 1933 to 1935.[2]
