The Ministry of Finance was established nine months after the independence of the Republic, on 14 November 1844, under the name Ministry of Finance and Trade. The first Minister was Ricardo Miura from 1844 to 1847.

Ramón Matías Mella (one of the Fathers of the Fatherland) was the fourth Minister from 26 September 1849 to 8 April 1850.

In 1926 its name was changed to Secretary of State for Finance, by its first Secretary M. Martin de Moya.

On 28 January 1931 it was merged with the Ministry of Labor and the Communications; its name was changed to Ministry of Finance, Labor and Communications.

On 27 August 1931, the 1-28-1931 decree was rescinded and the Secretariat reverted to being the Ministry of Finance.

On 28 November 1934, the ministry name changed to Secretary of State for the Treasury.

On 28 February 1938, the Secretary of State for the Treasury was called Secretary of State for the Treasury and Commerce.

On 4 May 1945 to the Secretary of State, Treasury and Commerce is called the State Department of Treasury and Public Credit.

On 1 January 1955, the Secretariat assumes the name of Ministry of Finance.

On 7 January 7 1957 is called the Secretariat of State for Finance and Banking and 14 May 1959 renamed Ministry of Finance. In May 1963 the Secretariats are called ministries, which changed its name to Ministry of Finance.

In September 1963 was again called Secretary of State for Finance.

During the War of April 1965, the Constitutionalist government establishes the Ministry of Finance, while the Government of National Reconstruction keeps the Secretary of State for Finance.

The Interim Government restored in 1965 the Ministry of Finance, until the 28 November 1966 a new constitution restores the name of Ministry of Finance.

On 27 December 2006 is once again called Secretary of State for Finance, Law 494-06 of Organization of the Ministry of Finance.
