Historical significance

  • Preliminaries were shot in India and in Seychelles.
  • Macau, Guiomar Madeira da Silva Pedruco, was the last of her four siblings in the Pedruco family who competed in Miss World. She then went on to compete in Miss Chinese International the following year, and make it to the top 5.
  • Dominican Republic returns to the semi-finals for the first time since Mariasela Alvarez won the first Miss World title for the Dominican Republic in 1982.
  • Nigeria's Emma Komlosy is the daughter of Patti Boulaye, and the first mixed-race winner (half-Hungarian) of her country's national pageant.
  • Thailand's Sirinya Winsiri is half-American with the name Cindy Burbridge.

Controversy

The event was organised by ABCL which was led by Amitabh Bachchan.[1] The beauty pageant saw resistance by several groups due to the perceived culture clash.[2][3][4][5] However due to support of the local government, the event was held successfully.
