Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), formerly the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), is a premier chemical technology research institute located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is focused on training and research in various branches of chemical engineering, chemical technology, and pharmacy. It was established in 1933 and was granted deemed university status in 2008. It is the only state-funded deemed university in India.

History

The ICT was founded in 1933 as a University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) of the University of Mumbai. Robert Forster was first Head of the Department (1933–38), followed by K. Ventakaraman, who continued its development. It was considerably improved under the guidance of Man Mohan Sharma. The university conferred the autonomous status on the UDCT in 1994, with concurrence from the Maharashtra State Government and the UGC.

UDCT was renamed as the Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology (Autonomous) (MUICT) on 26 January 2002. ICT is considered to be the best post-graduate center in India and comparable to other top-level centers in the world.[1]

In June 2004, in accordance with the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of the Government of India, under which the institute was selected as a Lead Institution, the Government of Maharashtra granted complete autonomy to the institute. On 12 September 2008, it was granted the deemed university status and renamed as the Institute of Chemical Technology.[2]

Institute of Chemical Technology was the first institute to be granted the elite badge by the government of the state of Maharashtra. This status put the institute on a par with other reputable schools such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research. It also makes the institute, which has plans to set up a satellite campus,[3] eligible for various special grants from the union and the state governments.[4]

The Institute was approached by Government of Odisha to establish a satellite campus in Odisha in November 2015. Odisha's need of a chemical technology institute was realized after Government of India approved setting up a Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region near Paradip in Odisha.[5] The land has been allotted, funds have been cleared and construction process is expected to begin by March 31, 2016. ICT, Odisha will have an Incubation Centre and it will have full time faculties too. ICT has already sent proposal to Government of Maharashtra to allot 100 Acre land in Navi Mumbai, but nothing constructive has taken place as of yet on this matter.[6]

Campus

ICT is located on a 16 acres (65,000 m2) campus at Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found.. The main building faces Nathalal Parikh Marg and has a beautiful architecture with fine dressed stone. The lush green gardens of the ICT are a source of pride, having been awarded several prizes at the City level.[citation needed] Other buildings, three boys hostels, two girls hostels, faculty and staff apartments are located behind the main building. The rear boundary of the institute runs along Kidwai Road.

Library

The Library attracts a variety of readers, students, scholars, technologists and industrialists. The library has a specialized collection in the field of chemical engineering / chemical technology and possesses some of the rarest reorts and books. It has 38,200 books, 25,290 journals and 10,000 standards and subscribes to 120 international and 25 national journals. It has MOU with BONET for participating in exchange program devised by MISSAT, DST, New Delhi.

Specializations and departments

At present ICT offers three degrees at undergraduate level:B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology), B.Chem.Eng. (Bachelor of Chemical Engineering), B.Pharm. (Bachelor of Pharmacy). The institute offers several courses at the masters level which specialize in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from ICT is highly sought after program and is arguably among the best ones in the country. M.Sc. from ICT boasts of accreditation from Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. ICT is second institute in the country to receive this accreditation.

ICT was started with two departments: Namely Department of Technology of Fibres and Textiles Processing and Department of Chemical Engineering. The department is still known to offer the most prestigious degree in the field of textiles in the country. Apart from B.Tech. the department offers M.Tech., M.Sc. and Ph.D. Most of the students of the department find themselves working with major textiles chemicals companies such as BASF, Clariant and Huntsman after their graduation. Quite a few (Approx 40%) of the students pursue higher studies in US after their graduation. The illustrious alumni of the department include Prof. Gulrajani of IIT Delhi and Mr. Edward Menzes, founder of Rossari Chemicals. Research

ICT has a very strong research culture. The first ever Ph.D. in India in engineering was awarded by the ICT in 1941. ICT has strong relationships with the industries and many government as well as industry sponsored projects take shape in ICT. In 2011, the Ministry of Textiles sanctioned ICT's National Centre of Excellence in Sportech a grant of ₨ 24.5 crore for researching sports-related apparel and goods. With this, ICT has become the first institute in the country to conduct research on sports fabrics.[7]

Some of the technological breakthroughs from ICT have been mentioned below:

  • Dyes department of ICT has developed laser dyestuff which costs few crore rupees for one Kg of dye. ICT manufactures the entire requirement of laser dyes of the nation.[8]
  • Chemical Engineering Department designed a heavy water reactor which has resulted in 50% in reduction in the energy requirement and 7% increase in productivity of heavy water requirement.[9]
  • Prof. J B Joshi, former director, ICT, designed an eco-cooker (US Patent US6668707) which has thermal efficiency of 60-70% compared to 10-20% thermal efficiency of conventional cooker. The cooker has been commercialized at several places resulting considerable energy saving.[10]

ICT graduates 100 PhDs annually (10 percent of India’s engineering PhDs) and plans to expand its capacity by 150 percent in the next two years with little public funding. ICT pioneered the practice of topping off its director’s salary with private funds.[11]

Research Partnerships

In 2016, Evonic and ICT sealed a research partnership agreement for the purpose of exploring research topics together in selected fields.Evonik and ICT research partnership agreement includes:

  • Provision of scholarship funds for master’s degree and PhD students
  • Collaboration in research and development projects in the field of chemical science
  • Financial support for internships for master, bachelor, and PhD students
  • Sponsor lectures and/or presentations by representatives of Evonik at ICT and vice versa [12]

Among other topics, currently ICT is working with University of Toranto over design of drug to target protein causing Alzheimer's Disease.[13]

Fellows of Royal Society

Till date ICT has produced quite a few prominent researchers. However it is interesting to note that ICT has produced two fellows of Royal Society out of 60 odd FRS from India. One of them Prof. M. M. Sharma has been director of the institute. The other person is Dr. Raghunath A. Mashelkar, former Director General of CSIR and the Chancellor of ICT, who is an alumnus of the institute. Recently Prof. G D Yadav, Vice Chancellor of ICT[14] and Prof. Bhalchandra Bhanage, Head of Department of Chemistry[15] were also bestowed with Fellowship of Royal Society of Chemistry.

Various Activities

Technological Association

Technological Association (TA) is an organisation that conducts co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in ICT. Currently, the Vice Chancellor, Prof G.D. Yadav is the President of TA and Prof. R.R.Deshmukh is its Vice President . A 24 Member Core student body organises these activities. It addresses the grievances of the students and is responsible for all students’ related activity in the institute. TA include Federal TA ( General Secretary, Cultural Secretary and Treasurer ), Facilitators ( Public Relationships Head, Sponsorship Head, Design Head,Ladies Rep., UAA Secretary, Webmaster ) Club Secretaries and Festival Secretaries. Clubs such as Literary Club, Art Club, Music Club . The Art club has the annual ART exhibition which displays every form of artwork by the students of the institute. There are many workshops conducted which don’t require any pre-requisite required. Manthan promotes Marathi culture in the institute and organises talk-show, workshops, poetry recitation and many more events. Literary Club organises regular quizzes, debates, book club meet-ups and also publishes institute magazine called The Spirit of ICT. The Music Club propagates the sense of music and dance into the multitude of the institute. Its activities include regular and efficient practice sessions where individuals prepare themselves and learn different ragas, dance forms and their choice of musical instruments. The E-Cell of ICT helps cultivate and promote the entrepreneurial spirit among the students. The Bombay Technologist is the annual technical journal and invites scientific research and review articles from students of all disciplines i.e. Chemical Engineering Chemical Technology and Pharmacy studying in the Institute. It aims to create awareness and encourages amongst the students regarding various aspects of technical-writing. TA also organises various inter/intra collegiate fests .Funtech is the annual intra college fest of the institute where a number of events from scratch to totality are carried out and the students can showcase their talent. Vortex ICT, the Chemfest, conducted in odd semesters is the technical fest of the institute and has Poster and Paper Presentation, Pharmacy event and also gives opportunity to students from all over the country to solve Industry Defined Problems and present their research work. The cultural festival, Manzar, is one of the biggest and most attended cultural festivals in all of Mumbai .Manzar's Social wing, 'Awaaz' performs awareness drives and workshops and other activities to perform what the creators think, is their duty to the society. Sportsaga is the sports festival that attracts individuals and teams from all over Mumbai. The ICT Marathon which happens every year, as per fashion and young and old will run for a cause.

Entrepreneurship Cell

ICT inaugurated its entrepreneurship cell in April 2013 with inaugurative lecture from Ashwin Dani (Founder of Asian Paints) and Yogesh Kothari (Founder of Alkyl Amines). A fellowship for visit to Korea was offered at the time of inauguration. The primary purpose behind the entrepreneurship cell was to accelerate the entrepreneurial culture at ICT.

ICT also has international dignitaries visiting regularly for contributing in the research as well as guidance students. Some of the international dignitaries include Ahmet Uzumcu, Director General of Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.[16]

Hostels

Several on-campus hostels provide accommodation to students from all educational streams.

There are 5 hostel buildings which cater to the students' need of accommodation.

  • Hostel No. 2 Girls hostel

Old Boys Hostel

The Hostel No. 1, better known as old hostel, was established in 1952. It has accommodations for 160 students and four faculty members. It has 48 single rooms and 48 double rooms.

New Boys Hostel No. 5"'

This hostel was built and inaugurated in 2005. The money for this Rs. 70 million building was raised by the alumni of the college. It has 7 floors, about 190 double rooms, 3 large guest rooms, 4 faculty flats, a dining hall, and a health clinic and a gym.

Sportsaga, the Sports festival (ICT Sportsaga)

Sportsaga is the annual sports festival of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Since its inception in the year 2005, Sportsaga has drawn to it sports enthusiasts from all over the city, state and nation. The 2013 edition featured over 20 events including the All Mumbai ICT Marathon and a closely contested athletics meet. The level of competition included not only the State’s top athletes but every type of sporting enthusiast, through both mainstream sporting events and informal events. Vortex - The Chemfest

In 2013, it was decided by the Technological Association (Student Council) of ICT that Exergy would be merged with the other technical festivals of the Institute, YICC (Young Innovators Choice Competition) and YRC (Young Researchers Competition). This led to the creation of Vortex - The Chemfest. Vortex-2013 saw over 2000 participants from various colleges across the country coming in to the ICT to showcase their Chemical Engineering skills. The showcase of the festival was the Industrial Design Problem(IDP) which carried a total prize money of INR 40,000 per problem.

MANZAR - The Cultural Festival

Manzar is the cultural festival of the Institute of Chemical technology. It has completed 10 years since it first began in 2007, and 2016 saw the 10th edition of this exceptional festival. Every year, Manzar proudly hosts a variety of events: music, dance, literary arts and fine arts events are some of them. The Dance and Fashion Show events are the most popular, with active participation of students from all over the city. Manzar has a social initiative called Awaaz, through which students are able to do their bit for all-round societal development and improvement of underprivileged lives. Apart from all this, Manzar also has the Cultural Night and the Popular Night. Many famous artists have performed on the Manzar stage, including Shaan, Kailash Kher, Shankar-Ehsaan-loy, Shalmali Kholgade, Sachin-Jigar, Niladri Kumar, Arijit Singh and Armaan Malik. Manzar 10.0 for the first time hosted DJ night instead of Cultural Night which was starring DJ NYK. Manzar attracts a crowd of over 20,000 people every year, and is one of the finest student-organised festivals in the city.

Texpression

The division of Fibres and Textiles Processing annually holds Texpression, a cultural festival. Texpression also brings the alumni of the division together to foster camaraderie and network among them.

Publications

The Spirit

The Spirit is the official bimonthly cultural magazine cum newsletter of ICT. There are typically 5-6 issues a year. The newsletter highlights the achievements of current students and alumni, has news and information about institute and is also a platform for current students to showcase their art and literary skills. The first issue was released in October 2006.

Sportsaga Publications

Sportsaga is the ICT's annual inter-college sports festival. It began in 2005 and has continued on since.

The Bombay Technologist

The Bombay Technologist is the annual peer reviewed journal of the institute, started in 1951. The journal publishes technical articles in the thrust areas of science and technology, written by both Undergraduate as well as Graduate students of the Institute.

Annually, the three best articles published are awarded prizes. The Best Post-Graduate student in the Institute is given the ‘Bombay Technologist Best Post-Graduate Student’ award. To foster the talents of the ICTians in non-technical areas, the journal has also instituted ‘Bombay Technologist Creativity’ Award. The Bombay Technologist also supports partial travel and registration expenses of students presenting technical papers within India.

Opportunities after graduation

Most of the ICT graduates choose to pursue Masters and Doctorate Level Studies immediately after their graduation. Some students join industry after graduation, however many of them go back to school for further studies. Many of the top ranked universities in the developed world consider only ICT graduates for studies apart from top IITs and BITS in India.

By rough estimate, around 25% of the students from ICT pursue higher MS or Ph.D. Rest of the students pursue career in the Industry or go for MBA in top Indian B-schools.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at ICT is the number one Chemical Engineering Department in the Country by all the standards: teaching, research and industrial relationship.[citation needed]

  • The international surveys conducted by Professor Jude Sommerfeld of Georgia Tech, USA since 1964 for every five-year period as well as every year and also during the 5-year period during 2004-2009 which included all IITs and IISc. Besides it is among top 10 departments in the world and in terms of productivity as measured by papers per faculty per dollar spent, it is number one in the world. The number of papers published in peer reviewed journals per faculty is also the highest in India.
  • BioSpectrum magazine rated the Bio Technology program of ICT as the number one among all public schools in India.[20]
  • The FIST programme (Funding for Infrastructure in Science and Technology)of DST(Department of Science and Technology) has revealed that the Chemical Engineering Department is the Best Department in all engineering departments in India. This is again the record which has been held due to the research contributions of faculty in international journals of repute. The value and impact of our research is reflected in highest number of papers per faculty member, highest impact factor per paper, and highest number of citations for papers of Chemical Engineering Department.
  • The Department is recognized as the UGC Centre for Advanced Studies for a record time since 1989 and as UGC Networking Resource Centre in Chemical Engineering, since 2008; only one of its kind and further supported by DST-FIST programme with state-of-the-art research facilities.
  • The MHRD had evaluated all deemed universities in 2009 and granted "A" grade only to 38 universities among 135. The ICT is rated with "A" grade. It is the only one among 4 in Maharashtra State, the other 3 being centrally funded TIFR, TISS and CIFE.[21]
  • ICT was ranked 11 in the Mint Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.[19]
  • A survey published in the Current Science (August 2009)ranked ICT 13th among top tech schools in the country on the basis of composite performance index. All the schools ranked above ICT offer courses in variety of fields and considering the niche positioning of ICT, this is indeed achievement. This survey also indicates that ICT ranks only second to IISc when it comes to citations per paper, which means the research from ICT have considerable impact on the ongoing research in the world.[22]
  • The institute has been rated AAAA+ in Careers 360 (Magazine) Top Engineering Colleges in India 2015.[23]
