Munawar Abad (pronounced as munaav var aa baad; اردو = منور اباد), locally known as Muniwar (Munawarabad), is a town located in heart of Srinagar (KMR). It is 2 km from Lal Chowk. Munawar Abad is the main link between downtown Srinagar and central Srinagar.

Name

The town gets its name from Pakistan Army Commando Major Malik Munawar Khan Awan, who infiltrated Indian Kashmir with his Unit Code named Ghaznavi Force during Operation Gibraltar in 1965 and launched a series of sabotage operations against Indian military in the area, including the capture of the Indian garrison in Rajouri itself. He assembled the locals, armed them and established pickets all along the Mehndar-Rajouri area, because of his intense activity with his much feared Ghaznavi Force, a Head Money worth 1lackh by Local Indian Administration was placed on him, however he managed to escape the Indians and withdrew back into Pakistan with his force at the start of 1965 Indo–Pak war. He was decorated with Sitara E Jurat (Star of Gallantry) by Pakistani Government.

Due to its central location, Muniwar is now becoming an important commercial hub of the city. New shopping complexes are being built. Also there are a number of guest houses and hotels which provide accommodation to tourists, students from other states and other people who come to Srinagar for business purposes. Near Baba Demb Road there is Srinagar's biggest furniture market.
