An illustrated folio of the Akbarnamah depicting the 16th century Mughal siege of Champaner in Gujarat. The two camels are probably the twin-humped Bactrian breed and are carrying naggada beaters

A naqara (Arabic: نقارة‎‎) was an especially large drum that was used by the Mongol in battle.[citation needed] The drum itself was so large it was necessary to have it carried in to battle by a beast of burden, traditionally a camel. Its main use was as a signaling device, to let warriors know when an attack, especially a surprise attack, begin.
