Narkatiaganj is a city and a notified area in West Champaran district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is a part of Tirhut Division, and situated 280 kilometres (170 mi) northwest of capital of the state, Patna.

It is known for its porous border with Nepal for serving a transit point for exchange of goods and to promote trade and relationship between India and Nepal. Narkatiaganj is the only railway junction in West Champaran district.

Narkatiaganj is home to some historical establishments as such, Chanki Garh which is said to be a palace of Chanakya in the reign of Chandragupta Maurya of the Mauryan period and Ashoka Stambha established by one of the greatest ruler of India, Ashoka the Great.

Overview

Narkatiaganj is a subdivision region in West Champaran district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is situated 280 kilometres (170 mi) northwest of capital Patna.[2] Narkatiaganj block has twenty seven Panchayats.[3][4] The city is well connected by roads and railways to all major places of Bihar and neighbor states. It is situated on the Barauni–Gorakhpur, Raxaul and Jainagar railway lines.[5] Hindi and Bhojpuri is the common and widely spoken language of this region. Additionally, speakers of Nepali and Punjabi are also present in significant numbers. Holi, Chhatth Puja, Makar Sankranti, Maha Shivratri, Vasant Panchami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Navratra, Diwali, Bhai Dooj & Hanuman Jayanti are the main festivals of Hindus, Muharram, Id-ul-Zuha (Bakri-id), Shab-I-Barat & Id-ul-Fitr (Ramzan Id) are the main festivals of Muslims, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Guru Purab, Lohri, Installation of Guru Granth Sahibji & Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti are the main festivals of Sikhs and Christmas, Easter & Good Friday are the main festivals of Christians, celebrated in great spirits.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Narkatiaganj had a population of 49,507 in 9083 households. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 43%. Narkatiaganj has an average literacy rate of 65%, lower than the national average of 74%, male literacy is 57.65% and female literacy is 42.34%. In Narkatiaganj, 15.7% of the population is under 6 years of age.[6]

Transportation

Narkatiaganj is well connected by roads and railways to all major cities. It is on the Barauni–Gorakhpur, Raxaul and Jainagar lines. Narkatiaganj railway station is a part of East Central Railway. It is connected to Raxaul on Indian side of border with Nepal. Following the metre gauge railway track development to the broad gauge railway, trains to major cities of India are operational from Narkatiaganj railway junction. However, it still has two meter gauge railways functional that one runs from Narkatiaganj to Bhikhna Thori and other to Raxaul. It has contributed to the growing importance of Narkatiaganj as it is the only railway junction situated in the West Chamaparan district. Narkatiaganj is connected to national highway 28B which links Chhapwa in Bihar to Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, passes through district towns of Bagaha, Lauria and finally goes out of district through Bettiah.

Places of interest

Narkatiaganj has historical Chanaki Garh situated nearby, which is said to be a palace of Chanakya in the region of Chandragupta Maurya of the Mauryan period.[8] An Iron Pillar (also known as Ashoka Stambha) established by one of the greatest ruler of India Ashoka is another center of attraction, representing the glorious history of India.[9][10]New Swadesi Sugar Mills Ltd., a sugar factory of Birla group is the prominent source driving the economy of the town.[11] Various religious places such as Birla Mandir, Gopala Baba Mandir, Satyanarayan Mandir, Gurudwara, Churches and a big Mosque represent the religious faith and unity in diversity of the people of the town. Harbora river reflects the natural beauty of the city. The main market place situated very near to the police station and the railway station, is a crowd place comprising not only local peoples but peoples from neighboring villages and small towns. There's a SSB camp located near the Narkatiaganj railway station contributing to the security and prosperity of the town.
