National Highway 24 or NH 24 is a National Highway in India that connects the National capital Delhi to Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow via. Ghaziabad, Hapur, Moradabad, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur and Sitapur running 438 km (272 mi) in length.[1]

Highway widening

NH-24 sections status as on 2014

  • Delhi (UP Gate) - (135 km) - Moradabad Stretch - 4 Lane (already exists, Partially Toll Taxed Movement)
  • Moradabad (121 km) Bareilly Stretch - 4 Lane (recently completed, Toll Taxed Movement)
  • Bareilly - (77 km) - Shahjahanpur (84 km) Sitapur Stretch - 2 Lane(4 Lane widening works in initial stages)
  • Sitapur - (75 km) - Lucknow Stretch -4 Lane (already exists, Toll Taxed Movement)

21-km stretch of NH-24 from UP Gate to Dasna would be widened in view of traffic problems faced by residents of Indirapuram and Noida, as per a decision taken at a meeting of the Authority. Additional Chief Executive Officer Pramanshu, who chaired the meeting, said that 5 underpasses would be constructed at regular intervals so that traffic from Noida can pass easily to Indirapuram and vice versa without going to NH-24.

This is one of three expressway projects that PMO is monitoring with the target of awarding work in this financial year. The estimated cost of the entire corridor, including land acquisition, is expected to be close to Rs 6,450 crore and government will bid it out on a build-operate-transfer (toll)

Sources said the proposal of starting the expressway from Nizamuddin Bridge was taken to tap the huge traffic flow from Delhi to make the project financially viable. [2] Apart from Indirapuram, Crossings Republik is other big sub cities of Ghaziabad, is also come up along the NH 24.[3]

On 18th November 2013 it was confirmed that center not Uttar Pradesh government will build the much delayed Delhi Meerut Expressway starting from Nizamuddin Bridge on Ring Road. Once complete, commuters will be able to reach Meerut in 45 to 60 minutes and cut travel time to Haridwar and Dehradun by almost an hour.[4]

While the present stretch of NH-24 up to Uttar Pradesh Gate will be widened to 14 lanes from the present eight, the road between UP Gate and Dasna will be eight-laned. The next phase of the expressway will be built on a new alignment from Dasna to Meerut — a six-lane stretch joining Meerut bypass. The 28km stretch between Nizamuddin Bridge and Dasna is one of the most congested in the NCR. The traffic flow is likely to increase considering dozens of new residential projects coming up along this stretch of NH-24.[5] The widening of NH24 till Dasna will be completed by December 2014.But it not seems viable.

Widening project updates

  • Aug 2015: Tenders floated for widening 49 kilometers section of NH-24 starting from Nizamuddin bridge (Delhi) and Hapur (U.P.). The 49 km section will be developed in three stretches simultaneously, each given a time-frame of 30 months to complete the development. [6] [7]
