Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road) or National Highway 45 (Tamil:தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலை 45) is one of the busiest National Highways in Southern India with a total length of 472 km (293 mi). The highway starts from Kathipara junction in Guindy, a busy confluence of five roads in south Chennai and extends up to Theni.[1] It connects Chennai to its airport and the southern suburbs. The three important Cities connected by this highway are Chennai, Trichy and Dindigul and the two important towns connected are Viluppuram and Theni in Tamil Nadu. The highway has a four lane (two lanes each direction) system between Chennai and Trichy, though a complete change to six lanes is planned. The Dindigul-Theni section is under four lane construction. Chennai International Airport is located on the highway within the Chennai City limits.

Traffic

At night, the highway experiences a huge volume of traffic. On an average, around 12,000 lorries use this highway to reach Chennai every night. The highway has several hotels and restaurants along the entire stretch, including five-star hotels such as Le Royal Meridien, Trident Hilton and Radisson GRT near the Chennai International Airport. Fatal accidents happen once in a while in this highway, mostly in the early mornings as the drivers sleep off while driving.[citation needed]The large amount of traffic on NH 45 is seen in between Chennai and Tindivanam.

Road Improvement Projects

In an effort to circumvent these longstanding problems, many infrastructure projects are being carried out on this highway including road over-bridges along the Chennai Meenambakkam Airport road and several rail over-bridges over the railway crossings on the highway, which can cut travel time as well as reduce traffic congestion. The six-lane system is currently extended between Tindivanam and Trichy for a distance of around 225 km (140 mi). Road sections between Tindivanam and Trichy, cholan nagar Trichy and Dindigul are opened to public traffic with the newly laid 4-lane system.[2]

The SEZ Corridor is an emerging corridor along an important arterial road called Grand Southern Trunk Road or NH 45 or simply GST in Chennai, lined up with a number of SEZ. GST Road offers unparalleled accessibility and the best transportation infrastructure in Chennai in terms of connectivity as it is connected by road, rail and air which is the basis for the emerging of this new corridor. A number of SEZ projects has emerged in this stretch, making it the SEZ corridor of Chennai. It includes MEPZ SEZ established in 1984,[3] Mahindra World City, New Chennai, Shriram's Gateway SEZ, Estancia SEZ, ETL Infrastructure and India Land SEZ.

It is also emerging as a major IT SEZ region with a number of huge investments by Infosys and India Land. Infosys has set up its largest development center in Mahindra SEZ while India Land Tech Park is developing a massive 500-acre (2.0 km2) SEZ which is estimated to have 20,900,000 sq ft (1,940,000 m2) office space for both IT and Electronics use.[4] Shriram The Gateway SEZ, is an integrated township with IT/ITeS SEZ residential and mall, which is also home for IT majors like Accenture, Mahindra Satyam[5] and EISL is an IT/ITES SEZ by ETL Infrastructure at Chengleput on 260 acres (1.1 km2).

Towns Connected

The Chennai suburban railway, South Line from St.Thomas Mount to Villupuram and South West Line from St.Thomas Mount to Chengalpattu, travels all along this highway. This highway is separated into three major segments from Chennai to Theni based on the traffic volume.

Chennai city areas like Guindy - Alandur - Meenambakkam - Tirusulam - Pallavaram - Chromepet - Tambaram - Perungalathur(Chennai Bypass towards Maduravoyal on NH 4) - up to Vandalur Chennai city limit.
